We study photopolymerization in a low-molecular weight liquid crystal with non-uniform director gradients. Phase separation results in spatially nonuniform distribution of polymer density controlled by the distorted nematic matrix. Director-gradient-controlled polymerization provides a new and useful technique to assemble micron-scale polymer architectures. PACS number(s): 61.30.Gd, 64.75.+g Ty...
tering and the polymer dispersed liquid crystal display. (E) 194. "The Quartz Watch with Digital Readout," H. R. Crane, The Physics Teacher 32(5), 298-299 (1994). This article describes the operation of a twisted nematic display and is written for high school and college physics educators. (E) 195. "Liquid-Crystal Displays: Molecules at Work," G. P. Polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals (PSFLCs) are made by photopolymerizing 3% reactive mesogenic monomer on a quasi bookshelf texture of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). We observe the formation of nano-scaled polymer fibrils templated by the two dimensionally ordered host. The polymer fibrils capture the orientation of the host with thin polymer fibrils interweaving the smect...
In this paper, we demonstrate a holographic polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal grating fabricated using a visible laser. As blue phase is stabilized by the interfered light, polymer-concentration gradient is achieved simultaneously. With the application of a uniform vertical electric field, periodic index distribution is obtained due to polymer-concentration gradient. The grating exhi...
We report a polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) in an in-plane-switching (IPS) cell with negligible hysteresis and good stability. Long ultraviolet (UV) wavelength and top-side (no IPS electrode) exposure create uniform polymer network, which in turn helps to suppress hysteresis. The effect of photoinitiator is also investigated. Although a BPLC precursor without photoinitiator ...
Polymer dispersed liquid crystals are generally described as a system with an isotropic liquid crystal (LC) droplet distribution in a polymer matrix. Using masked ultraviolet light and/or applied electric field a structured polymer/LC phase separation can be achieved. One technological advantage is the potential for integrated polymer/LC devices. This approach can be used to manufacture miniatu...
We proposed a novel UV curable reactive mesogen monomer for VA-LCD with Polymer-Sustained (Stabilized) Vertical Alignment (PSVA) which shows a high display performance. The experimental results reveal that the PSVA by the novel-monomer realizes less image sticking and better response time. key words: polymer-sustained (polymer-stabilized), phase separation, reactive mesogen, VA-LCD, PSVA
Abstract— This work investigates the improvement of the active reflection coefficient of waveguide-fed phased-array antenna using liquid crystal layers. The anisotropy properties of liquid crystal layer can be employed to eliminate blind scan angle and improve the wide angle impedance matching of the waveguide-fed phased array antennas. The authors have expressed the modal analysis of the waveg...
(1 of 6) 1600668 polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films stand out due to their ability to be switched from an opaque to a transparent state with the applied external electric field without the need for polarizers. Since its discovery,[13] researchers have extensively explored the potential applications of PDLCs in the areas of flat panel displays,[14] smart windows,[15,16] microlens,[17]...
