In 30 consecutive hyperthyroid patients with diffuse goitre divided dose therapy with carbimazole 40 mg and triiodothyronine 80 mug daily was shown to produce total or subtotal block in thyroid hormonogenesis. Once produced, this block could be invariably maintained with an equivalent single daily dose for periods up to three years. Its notable acceptability to patients, a more stable degree of...

The behavior of six congenitally hypothyroid and six normal control rats was assessed under forced alternation fixed-ratio, alternating lever cyclic-ratio (ALCR) and progressive-ratio schedules of reinforcement. Hypothyroidism was produced by adding methimazole (MMI) to the drinking water of pregnant dams from embryonic day 16 to postnatal day 25. There were no differences in behavioral perform...

A dialysis method for estimating ;free' thyroxine is compared with two indirect methods using the uptake of triiodothyronine by the red cells and by a Sephadex column. The three methods give results which correlate well and the Sephadex method is the simplest. The theoretical basis of such tests and their role in the assessment of thyroid status is briefly discussed.

To determine the effect of a phase shift in sleep on the circadian clock, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), cortisol, and melatonin, three robust markers of the circadian clock, were analyzed using a 10-min blood sampling procedure. In an initial experiment eight subjects were studied during two experimental sessions: once under baseline conditions with normal nighttime sleep from 2300 to 0700...

Hepatic glucokinase (EC 2.7.1.2) is first detectable around the 16th day in the neonatal rat [ l-31. Precocious appearance of the enzyme is induced by intubation of glucose; the resulting activities are enhanced by prior treatment of the animals with triiodothyronine (T3) [4,5]. The factors that regulate synthesis of glucokinase in neonatal rat liver are complex [6] and it would be advantageous...

To evaluate the effects of liothyronine (3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine, T(3)) on Na(+) channel current (I(Na)) properties, I(Na) was recorded in adult guinea pig ventricular myocytes. T(3) (1 nM) acutely increased whole cell I(Na) and shifted the steady-state I(Na) inactivation curve dose dependently. When the pipette solution contained 100 microM GTP or GTPgammaS, the effect of T(3) on the whole ...
