The present paper investigates the word order alternation of English transitive phrasal verbs such as, e.g., to pick up the book versus to pick the book up. It builds on traditional monofactorial analyses, but argues that previously used methods of analysis are grossly inadequate to describe, explain and predict the word order choice by native speakers. A hypothesis integrating virtually all re...

We present a new method for analyzing classifiers by visualization, which we call visual nonlinear discriminant analysis. Classifiers that output posterior probabilities are visualized by embedding samples and classes so as to approximate posterior probabilities using parametric embedding. The visualization provides a better intuitive understanding of such classifier characteristics as separabi...

This paper presents a novel facial expression recognition methodology. In order to classify the expression of a test face to one of seven pre-determined facial expression classes, multiple two-class classification tasks are carried out. For each such task, a unique set of features is identified that is enhanced, in terms of its ability to help produce a proper separation between the two specifi...

The generalization of linear classifiers is considered for training sample sizes smaller than the feature size. It is shown that there exists a good linear classifier, that is better than the Nearest Mean classifier for sample sizes for which Fisher’s linear discriminant cannot be used. The use and performance of this small sample size classifier is illustrated by some examples.

This paper is focused on regularized versions of classification analysis and their computation for high-dimensional data. A variety of regularized classification methods has been proposed and we critically discuss their computational aspects. We formulate several new algorithms for shrinkage linear discriminant analysis, which exploits a shrinkage covariance matrix estimator towards a regular t...

The Central Nervous System (CNS) and neuronal signals carry information that represents changes throughout life. This study seeks to establish some correlation between brain activity as a function of age, from the record of electroencephalographic signals (EEG), in subjects not suffering from neurological disorders, while performing a certain task. There were 59 healthy subjects that voluntaril...

brain-computer interface systems are a new mode of communication which provides a new path between brain and its surrounding by processing eeg signals measured in different mental states.  therefore, choosing suitable features is demanded for a good bci communication. in this regard, one of the points to be considered is feature vector dimensionality. we present a method of feature reduction us...

The purpose of this study was to examine the capability of hyperspectral narrow wavebands within the 400–900 nm range for distinguishing five cash crops commonly grown in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Data were collected from ten different fields in the West Nipissing agricultural zone (46°24'N lat., 80°07'W long.) and included two of each of the following crop types; soybean (Glycine max), can...
