INTRODUCTION Unlike other Legionella species, Legionella longbeachae has been associated with soil and potting composts instead of water systems, and it has caused pneumonia in gardeners. CASE PRESENTATION We report, to our knowledge, the first case of prolonged localized L. longbeachae infection in an accidental wound on the back of a hand caused by a broken flowerpot. CONCLUSION Identific...

The study aimed to assess the prevalence of Legionella spp. in dental unit waterlines of a dental clinic and to verify whether the microbiological parameters used as indicators of water quality were correlated with Legionella contamination. A risk management plan was subsequently implemented in the dental health care setting, in order to verify whether the adopted disinfection protocols were ef...

Several strains of Legionella pneumophila and other species of Legionella with proteolytic activities were compared by assays, including Southern hybridizations and Western immunoblots, to determine their proteolytic, hemolytic, and cytotoxic activities. Only proteases from strains of L. pneumophila were both hemolytic and cytotoxic, and proteolytic activities extracted from other species of Le...

We report on a patient who developed Legionella pneumonia after bone marrow transplantation. Despite appropriate antibiotic treatment, disease progressed. The patient developed a lung abscess from which Legionella and Prevotella were isolated. Cure was achieved by surgical resection. The resected material was sterile, but 16S ribosomal DNA analysis revealed Legionella DNA.

We developed a single-tube multiplex real-time PCR assay capable of simultaneously detecting and discriminating Legionella spp., Legionella pneumophila, and Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 in primary specimens. Evaluation of 21 clinical specimens and 115 clinical isolates demonstrated this assay to be a rapid, high-throughput diagnostic test with 100% specificity that may aid during legionel...

Legionellosis can be diagnosed by PCR using sputum samples. In this report, the methods of nine laboratories for 12 sputum samples with Legionella pneumophila and Legionella longbeachae are compared. We conclude that (i) liquefaction prevents PCR inhibition, (ii) the employed mip gene PCRs detected L. pneumophila only, and (iii) the 16S rRNA gene PCR detected both Legionella species and is pref...

A 38 year old woman with diabetes mellitus and bronchial asthma was admitted to hospital with pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae; she recovered promptly on erythromycin treatment. Six weeks later she presented with aortic valve endocarditis without concurrent lung disease. A concurrent increase in titres of antibody to Legionella bozemanii, L longbeachae, and L jordanis indicated a Legio...

We evaluated a new immunochromatographic assay (Oxoid Xpect Legionella test kit) for the ability to detect Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen in urine. The results were compared with those obtained with the Binax NOW urinary antigen test by following the manufacturers' instructions. The sensitivities and specificities were estimated to be 89 and 100%, respectively, for the Oxoid Xpect L...

We evaluated a 33-valent polyclonal indirect immunofluorescent-reagent kit (Merifluor-Legionella; Meridian Diagnostics Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio) made for the detection of Legionella species by testing bacterial isolates, seeded sputum, and negative sputum samples. Use of the reagent according to the directions of the manufacturer gave false-negative staining of homologous culture isolates due to ...

Accurately quantifying Legionella for regulatory purposes to protect public health is essential. Real-time PCR (qPCR) has been proposed as a better method for detecting and enumerating Legionella in samples than conventional culture method. However, since qPCR amplifies any target DNA in the sample, the technique's inability to discriminate between live and dead cells means that counts are gene...
