This set of lectures describes the physics of moment formation, the basic physics of the Kondo effect and the development of a coherent heavy electron fluid in the dense Kondo lattice. The last lecture discusses the open problem of quantum criticality in heavy electron systems.
We examine the interplay of the Kondo effect and the RKKY interactions in electronic Griffiths phases using extended dynamical mean-field theory methods. We find that sub-Ohmic dissipation is generated for sufficiently strong disorder, leading to the suppression of Kondo screening on a finite fraction of spins, and giving rise to universal spin-liquid behavior.
We use the method of dynamical mean field thoery, to study the effect of Kondo resonance on optical third harmonic generation (THG) spectra of strongly correlated systems across the metal-insulator transition. We find that THG signals are proportional to the quasiparticle weight z of the Kondo peak, and are precursors of Mott-Hubbard gap formation. PACS 42.65.-k; 71.27.+a; 71.30.+h
– In this Letter we study the Kondo effect in an ultrasmall metallic grain, i.e. small enough to have a discrete energy-level spectrum, by calculating the susceptibility χ of the magnetic impurity. Our quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and analytic solution of a simple model, show that the behavior changes dramatically depending on whether the number of electrons in the grain is even or odd. We ...
We explore the ultrafast optical response of Yb14MnSb11, providing further evidence that this compound is the first d-electron, ferromagnetic, underscreened Kondo lattice. These results also provide the first demonstration of coupling between an optical phonon mode and the Kondo effect.
Recently Affleck et al. derived the existence of Friedel oscillations in the presence of a Kondo impurity. They supported their analytic derivation by numerical calculations using Wilson’s renormalization approach (NRG). In this paper the size of the Friedel oscillations is calculated with the FAIR method (Friedel Artificially Inserted Resonance) which has been recently developed. The results o...
We consider electronic transport through break-junctions bridged by a single molecule in the Kondo regime. We describe the system by a two-channel Anderson model. We take the tunneling matrix elements to depend on the position of the molecule. It is shown, that if the modulation of the tunneling by displacement is large, the potential confining the molecule to the central position between the l...
In diiusive Cu and Au quantum wires at nite transport voltage U the non-equilibrium distribution function f(E; U) exhibits scaling behavior, f(E; U) = f(E=eU), indicating anomalous energy relaxation processes in these wires. We show that in nonequilibrium the Kondo eeect, generated either by magnetic impurities (single-channel Kondo eeect) or possibly by non-magnetic, degenerate two-level syste...
Quantum spin transport is studied in an interacting quantum dot. It is found that a conductance ”plateau” emerges in the non-linear charge conductance by a spin bias in the Kondo regime. The conductance plateau, as a complementary to the Kondo peak, originates from the strong electron correlation and exchange processes in the quantum dot, and can be regarded as one of the characteristics in qua...
Within a mean-field approximation, the ground state and finite temperature phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model have been carefully studied as functions of the Kondo coupling J and the conduction electron concentration [Formula: see text]. In addition to the conventional hybridization between local moments and itinerant electrons, a staggered hybridization is proposed to ch...
