A series of sulfonium halides bearing allyl groups have been prepared and characterized. Anion metathesis with Li[Tf2N] and Ag[N(CN)2] resulted in sulfonium-based ionic liquids which exhibit low viscosities at room temperature. The solid state structure of one of the halide salts was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.
The liquid structure of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [BMIM]PF(6), was investigated by neutron diffraction with H/D substitution method, where the hydrogen atoms in the imidazolium ring were partially deuterated. The local structures around the ring hydrogen atoms in liquid are very similar to those estimated from the crystal structure.
The crystal structures and thermal behavior of the 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-2,3-dimethylimidazolium chloride and hexa-fluorophosphate salts are compared with the analogous 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium salts to examine the influence of the ether oxygen on salt thermal properties for a typical constituent cation used in the preparation of ionic liquids.
