Bacillus cereus is a rare cause of endocarditis, typically associated with intravenous drug abuse, rheumatic heart disease, prosthetic heart valves, pacemakers, or immunodeficiency. We present the first case of native valve Bacillus cereus endocarditis with no apparent risk factors. The patient had a fulminant course requiring emergent valve replacement.
Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease which has been characterized by its identified risk groups. There are many risk factors identified. We present a surprising four cases of disseminated cryptococcosis in intravenous drug abuse (IVDA) patients in a short period of time and in one geographical area, this observation suggest that there may be a new association with IVDA and cryptococosis.
Jugular venous thrombosis is unusual and is associated with central venous catheterisation, intravenous drug abuse and head and neck sepsis. It is rarely associated with malignancy. We report a case of metastatic carcinoma of unknown primary in a forty year old female which presented with jugular venous thrombosis. The discussion includes investigation and treatment options for this condition.
We diagnosed an unusual case of Best's disease in a patient with multiple geographic macular and extramacular lesions. Initial confusion in the diagnosis arose because of a past history of intravenous drug abuse by the patient. The electro-oculogram was helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE Noninvasive brain imaging techniques are a powerful tool for researching the effects of drug abuse on brain activation measures. However, because many drugs have direct vascular effects, the validity of techniques that depend on blood flow measures as a reflection of neuronal activity may be called into question. This may be of particular concern in event-related functional magnetic r...
Drug abuse is an alarming problem in Bangladesh where there are 1.7 million drug abusers (1). The number is increasing greatly over recent years. Among drug abusers, intravenous drug use has the potential to turn a slow HIV epidemic into an explosive and devastating one, as was observed in Thailand and northern India (2,3). Drug use shortens life expectancy, decreases productivity, increases ab...
We report the first documented case of bacteremia caused by Asaia bogorensis in a young patient with a history of intravenous-drug abuse. A. bogorensis was identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. The isolate was exceptionally resistant to almost all antibiotics that are routinely tested for gram-negative rods but was susceptible to netilmicin, gentamicin, and doxycycline.
Isolated pulmonary valve endocarditis is an uncommon clinical entity and is usually associated with intravenous drug abuse. The majority of cases involve the tricuspid valve. Isolated pulmonary valve bacterial endocarditis complicating Triology of Fallot ( which constitutes pulmonary valve stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy and atrial septal defect) is very rare. A rare complication of a r...
Isolated pulmonary valve endocarditis is a very rare entity, usually associated with intravenous drug abuse. We describe a case of isolated pulmonary valve endocarditis in a diabetic patient with no apparent precipitating factors besides a lesion on the right hallux. The clinical course was favorable and he was discharged home after a six-week course of antibiotic therapy.
