Purpose: To study the effect of orbital steroid injections administered in the treatment of thyroid eye disease (TED) on intraocular pressure (IOP). Methods: Retrospective chart review of consecutive patients over 70 months with active thyroid eye disease (TED) seen in a referral oculoplastic practice who underwent orbital steroid injections. Results: The clinical records of 56 patients were in...

PURPOSE To explore ocular changes in healthy people after exercise. METHODS Twenty five volunteers underwent exercise for 15 minutes on a treadmill. Measurements of choroidal thickness, intraocular pressure (IOP), ocular biometry, and blood pressure were taken before and after exercise. Enhanced Depth Imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) was used to measure choroidal thickness at th...

The effect of a continuous 110-km march with a 20-kg backpack load on intraocular pressure (IOP), plasma osmolarity, blood lactate, pH, and other related laboratory parameters was studied in 22 healthy young volunteers. Intraocular pressure decreased significantly at all marching intervals and returned to baseline level 3 hr after the completion of marching. The maximal average reduction during...

The changes in intraocular pressure due to blood pH, PCO2, and PO2 alterations induced by hyperventilation and hypercapnea in man undergoing routine general anaesthesia were studied. It was shown that hypercapnea produces elevation of intraocular pressure, while hyperventilation lowers it. Acetazolamide pretreatment did not alter these IOP responses to PCO2, PO2, and blood pH changes.

Myopia is characterized by an increase in axial length of the eye, but the reasons for the axial elongation are still unknown. Higher intraocular pressure (IOP) has been associated with myopia and could be involved in eye enlargement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of intraocular pressure on the geometry of the chick eye and to investigate whether an increase in IOP cou...

OBJECTIVES To investigate the association of smoking habits with blood pressure (BP) and intraocular pressure (IOP), and to examine whether the smoking-BP association is related to the IOP level. METHODS This study was conducted on the basis of a cross-sectional design using annual health check-up data during one-year between August, 1999 and August, 2000 for 611 middle and old-aged Japanese ...

Ocular complications are frequent in chronic renal failure patients treated with maintenance hemodialysis (HD) and in renal allograft recipients. Headache, nausea and fatigue sometimes develop in combination with a rise in intraocular pressure (IOP). We did not find statistically significant differences in IOP before and after HD. There was no correlation between changes in IOP during HD and th...

Intraocular pressure (IOP) correlates with progressive loss of visual field in patients with glaucoma. Decreasing IOP has been proven to reduce progressive loss of the visual field. This is true both for glaucoma patients with IOPs above or within the normal range. For individuals with ocular hypertension (high IOP but no evidence of glaucomatous neuropathy), lowering IOP may reduce the risk of...

The aim of this study was to determine ophthalmoscopic, ultrasonographic and electrodiagnostic response of the experimentally induced increasing intraocular pressure (IOP) in 6 New Zealand rabbits. IOP was induced by cauterizing 3 vortex and 3 episcleral veins. The cases were evaluated by ophthalmoscopy, ultrasonography (USG), electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP). Signif...

Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation is a key risk factor for glaucoma. Our understanding of the effect that IOP elevation has on the eye has been greatly enhanced by the application of the electroretinogram (ERG). In this paper, we describe how the ERG in the rodent eye is affected by changes in IOP magnitude, duration, and number of spikes. We consider how the variables of blood pressure and ...
