A 9 year old boy developed acute monoarthritis of the left knee concurrent with the appearance of a varicella zoster virus (VZV) rash. Repeated VZV DNA hybridisation of the cells within the synovial fluid and synovial membrane failed to show any evidence of intracellular virus. Virus was isolated from synovial fluid 24 hours after the start of clinical infection but not later. These findings su...

Concentrations of unbound drug in the interstitial fluid of the brain are not rapidly measured in vivo. Therefore, measurement of total drug levels, i.e., the amount of drug per gram of brain, has been a common but unhelpful practice in drug discovery programs relating to central drug effects. This study was designed to evaluate in vitro techniques for faster estimation of unbound drug concentr...

Perioperative fluid therapy remains the subject of active controversy. Indeed, clinical trials investigating the effects of fluid administration on outcome in surgical patients report controversial results. Critical review of these trials reveals that current standard fluid therapy is not at all evidence-based. Although it is evident that fluid overload should be avoided, replacement of fluid l...

A model based on the elementary principles of hydrostatic and air pressures is proposed for classroom demonstration of some concepts related to membrane potential. The instrument comprises a system of U tubes, pressure gauges, stopcocks, and syringes. Intracellular and extracellular ionic concentrations are represented in the model by the pressure heads of fluid columns in the twin limbs of the...

Conventional indicator dilution techniques for measuring body fluid volume are laborious, expensive, and highly invasive. Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) may be a useful alternative due to being rapid, minimally invasive, and allowing repeated measurements. BIS has not been reported in mice; hence we examined how well BIS estimates body fluid volume in mice. Using C57/Bl6 mice, the BIS system d...

T H E chemical composition of the foetal fluids in the rabbit was studied by Davies & Routh (1957). These investigators showed that the amniotic and exocoelomic fluids resembled extracellular fluid in their ionic composition whereas the allantoic fluid more closely resembled intracellular fluid. These findings were confirmed by Dickerson & McCance (1957). An experimental study of the trans-memb...

Background. Adequate fluid management could be essential to minimize high arterial stiffness observed in chronically hemodialyzed patients (CHP). Aim. To determine the association between body fluid status and central and peripheral arterial stiffness levels. Methods. Arterial stiffness was assessed in 65 CHP by measuring the pulse wave velocity (PWV) in a central arterial pathway (carotid-femo...

We aspirated the retrocalcaneal bursa in cadavers to determine the characteristics of bursal fluid. A small amount of clear, viscous fluid was constantly present in the bursa. Leucocyte count was low, and the mucin clot test was good. With the same technique we aspirated the retrocalcaneal bursae of 4 patients. Three had Reiter's syndrome; the bursal fluid was inflammatory, and symptoms promptl...

For enumeration of intracellular organisms (ICO) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples, the May-Grünwald-Giemsa (MGG) stain displayed higher interobserver agreement than the acridine orange and Gram stains. The MGG stain offered a reliable enumeration of ICO when 200 cells were counted by one observer.
