A neural network architecture, which models synapses as Finite Impulse Response (FIR) linear lters, is discussed for use in time series prediction. Analysis and methodology are detailed in the context of the Santa Fe Institute Time Series Prediction Competition. Results of the competition show that the FIR network performed remarkably well on a chaotic laser intensity time series.

Conditions and challenges in the country's banking industry including the increasing intensity of competition in this industry and the quality of services have compounded the importance of assessing the current situation of the internal control systems and its role in increasing the quality of services. People have a greater desire to date highly attractive partners, which induces intrasexual competition between same-sex individuals. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore whether and how intrasexual competition modulates pain empathy for a same-sex rival and the underlying neural mechanism. Participants were scanned while processing the pain of a same-sex 'luck...

This paper explores the relationship between the intensity of competition in product markets and firms’ incentives to lower their production costs by illegal means. Our framework combines a Salop circle with a crime model à la Becker, allowing us to differentiate between several measures for the intensity of competition. We establish that more firms in the industry (i.e., lower entry costs) red...

We study interaction effects between intra-firm conflicts and interfirm competition on a duopolistic market with seller firms employing one or more agents and implementing tournament incentives. We show that inter-firm competition leads to higher incentive intensity, higher efforts and output levels but lower profits.

Recent empirical evidences show negative relationship between outsourcing and profitability. This paper provides a theoretical explanation for this phenomenon. In an oligopoly model, we show that firms earn lower profits in the outsourcing equilibrium compared to the situation where neither firm does outsourcing, and it holds irrespective of the intensity of competition. So, outsourcing creates...

This paper proposes a model of efficiency wage with endogenous workers flows in interaction with imperfect competition on the product markets. Subject to economy-wide shocks, firms hire and fire workers thus generating a certain turnover. We show that the intensity of this turnover negatively affects workers’ incentives and induces higher efficiency wage premia. Increased competition pushes rea...
