The role of nonlinear dissipation in vibrational resonance (VR) is investigated in an inhomogeneous system characterized by a symmetric and spatially periodic potential and subjected to nonuniform state-dependent damping and a biharmonic driving force. The contributions of the parameters of the high-frequency signal to the system's effective dissipation are examined theoretically in comparison ...

Nonergodicity observed in single-particle tracking experiments is usually modeled by transient trapping rather than spatial disorder. We introduce models of a particle diffusing in a medium consisting of regions with random sizes and random diffusivities. The particle is never trapped but rather performs continuous Brownian motion with the local diffusion constant. Under simple assumptions on t...

The first part of this paper is devoted to extending the Huygens-Fresnel principle to a medium that exhibits a spatial (but not temporal) variation in index of refraction. Utilizing a reciprocity theorem for a monochromatic disturbance in a weakly inhomogeneous medium, it is shown that the secondary wave-front will be determined by the envelope of spherical wavelets from the primary wavefront, ...

Interaction of incompressible and compressible MHD fluctuations on a one-dimensional plasma inhomogeneity, transverse to the magnetic field, is considered in the three-dimensional regime. An initially incompressible (Alfvénic) MHD fluctuation generates, by linear coupling, compressible (magnetoacoustic) fluctuations. In the initial stage of the interaction, the efficiency of the coupling is enh...

Interaction of impulsively generated MHD waves with a one-dimensional plasma inhomogeneity, transverse to the magnetic field, is considered in the three-dimensional regime. Because of the transverse inhomogeneity, MHD fluctuations, even if they do not include initially any density perturbation, evolve toward states where the compressible components tend to become predominant. The propagating MH...

This paper presents an efficient algorithm to sample free path in inhomogeneous participating media. The method is based on the concept of mixing “virtual” particles to the medium, that complete the extinction coefficient to a piece-wise constant function. We use the sampling formulae developed for piece-wise homogeneous medium, but decide randomly whether a real or a virtual particle is hit.

By modeling a linear, anisotropic and inhomogeneous magnetodielectric medium with two independent set of harmonic oscillators, electromagnetic field is quantized in such a medium. The electric and magnetic polarizations of the medium are expressed as linear combinations of the ladder operators describing the magnetodielectric medium. The Maxwell and the constitutive equations of the medium are ...

Maxwell equations were originally designed to describe classic electromagnetic phenomena in any type of medium. In particular, to describe electromagnetic phenomena under the quasistatic electric approximation in media that are electrically inhomogeneous and isotropic, such as for example when there are strong spatial variations of conductivity, the formalism must be adapted according to the pr...
