but I prefer to use needs and desires because I feel these terms better frame discussions from the user's perspective, and work better when discussing the parallel between an organization's perspective and that of the user of its products.
Much attention has been paid in HCI to techniques for designing systems that conform to the tasks users wish to carry out. It is often the case that such approaches rely on identifying the combinations of commands a user will be expected to issue and information thay will need to access, and designing an interface with appropriate temporal behaviour. Many fields of activity, however, are highly...
Instead of a formal examination, HCI students completed part of their assessment in a local video game parlour. It is one of the few places where a large group of students can experience participant observation of technology in its everyday situation of use. In this paper we discuss some of the useability issues that were identified during the evaluations as well as the pedagogical insights tha...
Group efficacy has begun to receive more attention in HCI. The paper describes a mixed-design experiment aimed to explore the effect of time on group efficacy development in two computer-mediated virtual conditions: asynchronous vs. multi-synchronous teams. The relationships of group efficacy measures at different times and tool evaluation, team satisfaction and performance are also explored. F...
uiGarden, a bilingual webzine, gives an opportunity between practitioners and researches working in user experience designer field from the Chinese and English speaking part of the world to exchange opinions and gain further knowledge within the field.
The Centre for HCI Design (HCID) at City University London has Inclusive Design as one of its key research themes. Older people have been the main research population we have been studying under this theme for a number of years now. Our work in this theme focuses primarily on the design and evaluation of web interfaces for this population. In this paper we describe our work in this area.
We consider how to teach effectively with particular reference to HCI. HCI can be taught to explicitly empower students to engage with their own learning. Further, HCI motivates because HCI empowers students to make a valuable and lasting contribution to the world.
