BACKGROUND The incidence of rheumatic heart disease is great in Brazil. We analyzed the distribution of human leukocyte (HLA) antigens in a Brazilian population sample with rheumatic fever or rheumatic heart disease, with the aim of better understanding the mechanisms involved. METHODS AND RESULTS HLA class I (A, B, and C) and class II (DR and DQ) antigen distribution was studied in 40 patien...

DNA methods have resulted in improved renal allograft survival rates in cadaveric renal transplantation. This paper describes the impact of DNA typing by PCRSSP on a living related renal transplant (LRRT) programme. It evaluates error rates in serology, acute rejections, graft function and survival rates between the two typing methods. Serological typing was done on CTS 120 antisera Class 1 and...

Introduction Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune and inflammatory disease. Many studies show HLA alleles can be associated with SLE. The aim of this study was to determine the association of HLA-DRB1 alleles with juvenile- onset in Iranian children. Materials and Methods At a case – control study, 31 children with systemic lupus erythematosus (case group) who referred to ...

Background: Human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) are found to be significant genetic factors concerning the susceptibility of an individual to certain diseases. Objective: To determine the association between variants of class I (A and B) and class II (DRB1) HLA alleles and chronic renal failure (CRF), compared with healthy controls, in Yemen. Methods: A case-control study in the Urology and Nephrol...

Background: The strong association of Behcet’s disease with HLA-B5 antigen has been observed in several ethnic groups from Middle East to Far East. Objective: To evaluate the frequency and association of HLA-B5 and also likelihood ratio of involvement in Behcet’s disease in a group of Iranian patients. Patients and Methods: HLA-B5 antigen typing was performed by serologic method in 56 patients ...

Fatal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) developed in a patient with Hodgkin's disease treated with combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy following the transfusion of 2 U of packed red blood cells. Clinical features of the GVHD included the development of exfoliative dermatitis, progressive hepatic dysfunction, aplastic anemia, and finally progressive fatal pneumonia. GVHD was documented by skin...

We identified and characterized an HLA-A1 aberrant allele (A*0118N) resulting from a novel molecular mechanism; this allele was present in an unusually informative family with a near identical parental HLA haplotype (c d) differing only by one nucleotide substitution in one HLA-A allele, A*0118N, of the maternal HLA haplotype (c) and not of the paternal HLA haplotype (a). Although serologic HLA...

A sensitive method of HLA-DRB1 typing was devised using a semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis (semi-nested PCR-RFLP method). The first-round amplification (30 cycles) of the semi-nested PCR was performed using DRB generic primer pairs and the second round of PCRs (20 cycles) were performed using DRB1 group-specific p...

Using a standard microcytotoxicity (NIH) technique of tissue typing, the HLA-B27 antigen was identified in 30 out of 34 patients (HH.2%) with classical ankylosing spondylitis (AS), compared to 6 out of 70 controls (H.6%) (P < 0.005). We also found this antigen in 8 out of 76 (10.5%) patients with non-AS arthritis.

BACKGROUND Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) has been investigated in different populations and ethnic groups, but no such data is available from Pakistan. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical profile of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), and determine the associated antigens and alleles by performing HLA typing. PATIENTS AND METHODS A tota...
