The apparent impacts of overgrowth of population are many. It has direct impact on natural surroundings, i.e. land, water air and natural resources. Lead is found naturally in a variety of minerals. It is most ancient poison known to man. Environmental levels of lead have increased more than 1,000-fold over the past three centuries as a result of human activity. Leafy fresh vegetables grown in ...

As a forward step to understand the metal bioaccumulation in fish species, a study of trace metal speciation of sediment was achieved. Trace metals were measured in sediments and two fish species, Heteropneustes fossilis and Trichogaster fasciata by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Abundance of total trace metals in sediments varied in the following decreasing order:...

The air-breathing singhi catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis) is frequently being challenged by different environmental insults such as hyper-ammonia, dehydration and osmotic stresses in their natural habitats throughout the year. The present study investigated the effect of hyperosmotic stress, due to exposure to hypertonic environment (300 mM mannitol) for 14 days, on gluconeogenesis in this cat...

Endotoxin of E. tarda grown in brain heart infusion broth at 30 degrees C for 18 hr was extracted by differential centrifugation. Fingerlings of H. fossilis (weighing 1-2 g) were allowed for hyperosmotic infiltration in the endotoxin at the rate of 0,2,4,8,16 and 20 mg/l. Mortality varied from 20-50% at 2 to 20 mg/ml. Toxin treated fishes were challenged 21 days post treatment with the same E. ...
