Study of hermit crabs from Alboran Sea has allowed recognition of two different morphological forms under what had been understood as Pagurus forbesii. Based on morphological observations with various species of Pagurus, and molecular studies, a new species is described as P. pseudosculptimanus. An overview of species of Pagurus from the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea is provided.
Coenobitidae are one out of at least five crustacean lineages which independently succeeded in the transition from water to land. This change in lifestyle required adaptation of the peripheral olfactory organs, the antennules, in order to sense chemical cues in the new terrestrial habitat. Hermit crab olfactory aesthetascs are arranged in a field on the distal segment of the antennular flagellu...
Oxygen consumption (VOZ) was measured as hermit crabs (Coenobita compressus) walked at controlled velocities on a motor-driven treadmill inside a small respirometer. The crabs displayed an aerobic response to exercise with a rapid increase in VQ2 reaching a steady state in about 5-6 min followed by a rapid recovery. The highest VQ2 was four times the resting rate. V^ was directly dependent on t...
The methanol extract isolated from hermit crab, D. avarus degenerated ovarion and uterine tissues in cyclic and pregnant mice, treated before and after the implantation. Immunohistochemical staining using CD31 and Factor VIII specific to endothelial cells showed reduction in microvessel density. The hormonal assay showed decrease in the progesterone secretion in all experimental mice.
This paper develops a new family of convexity-preserving splines of order n, hereby entitled the CPn-spline, that preserves convexity when derivatives at the data points satisfy some reasonable conditions. The spline comprises four components: a constant term, a first order term, and two nth order binomials. A slope-averaging-method is proposed for the general implementation of the new spline. ...
Fat conic section and fat conic spline are defined. With well established properties of fat conic splines, the problem of approximating a ruled surface by a tangent smooth cone spline can then be changed as the problem of fitting a plane fat curve by a fat conic spline. Moreover, the fitting error between the ruled surface and the cone spline can be estimated explicitly via fat conic spline fit...
We analyse for approaches to elimination of a fast variable, which are applicable systems like passive Brownian particles: (i) moment formalism, (ii) corresponding cumulant (iii) Hermite function basis, (iv) formal 'cumulants' the Hermit basis. The accuracy and its strong order assessed. applicability performance two first also demonstrated active particles.
The shape-adjustable curve constructed by uniform B-spline basis function with parameter is an extension of uniform B-spline curve. In this paper, we study the relation between the uniform B-spline basis functions with parameter and the B-spline basis functions. Based on the degree elevation of B-spline, we extend the uniform B-spline basis functions with parameter to ones with multiple paramet...
Management of the few regulated ornamental fisheries relies on inadequate information about the life history of the target species. Herein, we investigated the reproductive biology of the most heavily traded marine invertebrate in the western Atlantic; the blue-legged hermit crab Clibanarius tricolor. We report on density, individual-level, and population-level reproductive parameters in 14 pop...
