Bronchial artery embolization (BAE) is a well-established minimally invasive procedure in the management of moderate to massive and recurrent hemoptysis. The bronchial circulation aneurysms and dilatations are commonly responsible for the hemoptysis and have an easy approach through the descending aorta via the femoral or subclavian route by angiography. There are very few common complications ...
Pulmonary endometriosis (PEM) is a rare disease characterized by the proliferation of ectopic endometrial tissue in the lungs, which presents as catamenial hemoptysis. A 20-year-old-woman was admitted for repeated hemoptysis. Chest CT revealed a ground-glass opacity that appeared consistently with her menstrual cycle. Our detailed inquiry revealed a history of artificial abortion, which was fol...
Systemic sclerosis or scleroderma is associated with distal vasculitis, Raynaud's phenomenon, and inflammation of internal organs and the skin. We present on a 58-year-old Thai woman with systemic sclerosis who came to the 10(th) Zonal Tuberculosis and Chest Disease Center, Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2009 and presented with hemoptysis and a solitary huge-lung cavity as the predominant clinical man...
Abstract Background Hemoptysis is very common and can be life threatening in clinical practice for nontuberculous mycobacteria. The serum antibody against the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC-Ab), majority of mycobacteria species, well known to reflect activity MAC lung disease; however, there no study investigating association between MAC-Ab hemoptysis patients. Therefore, we assessed whether ...
Actinomycosis is a rare and slowly progressive infectious disease with mild symptoms such as low-grade fever, cough, chest pain and minor hemoptysis. We report an 81-year-old woman who was admitted to our intensive care unit with presentation of massive hemoptysis associated with hypotension, bradycardia and respiratory failure. The initial diagnosis was necrotizing pneumonia using chest X-ray ...
Massive cryptogenic hemoptysis is a common presenting symptom and cause of hospitalization for respiratory diseases, and represents a challenging condition in the clinical. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and pathologic data and management of patients with massive cryptogenic hemoptysis. We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with massive cryptogenic hemotysis in our hospital between ...
Aim: Purpose of the study was to investigate the efficacy of empiric arterial embolization and to achieve hemostasis in patients with massive hemoptysis. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of histories and interventional studies of 56 patients (40 male, 16 female, median age 57 years; range, 16 83 years) referred endovascular treatment of massive hemoptysis over a period of 17 years....
PURPOSE Massive hemoptysis is a life threatening situation with high mortality rates. Surgery is effective, however generally an avoided treatment. We report our experience with patients undergoing lung resection for life-threatening hemoptysis. METHODS Records of all surgically treated patients for hemoptysis between June 2009 and June 2012 were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively. RESUL...
Massive hemoptysis caused by bronchiectasis in which bronchial artery embolization does not control the bleeding is not rare. Traditional surgical intervention is anatomical lung resection. We present a case of a patient with bronchiectasis and massive hemoptysis in which the bleeding was controlled with transection of a pulmonary vein and bronchus with preservation of the pulmonary artery.
Hemoptysis and pulmonary edema associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use is a known condition, but is probably underreported. The mechanisms of induction of pulmonary toxicity are still not well understood. We describe a case of hemoptysis and dyspnea in a scuba diver who was taking diclofenac.
