Juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS; Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man2 174900) is a rare Mendelian disorder in which individuals have typical hamartomatous polyps within the gastrointestinal tract. The stromal element of the polyps has classically been thought to be the proliferative component, although epithelial malignancies (largely gastrointestinal cancers) occur more frequently than expect...
A case of solitary gastric hamartomatous polyp, presenting as upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage, is reported. Both the entity itself, and the clinical presentation, are exceptional. The significance of the solitary gastric hamartomatous polyp and implications of its diagnosis are discussed.
We present the clinical case of a polyp in the hypopharynx discovered incidentally while performing an upper digestive endoscopy in a middle aged woman. Endoscopic resection was performed, and the histological result was a hamartomatous polyp. We review the diagnosis and treatment of this rare entity.
Filiform polyposis (FP) of the colon is an uncommon entity referred to as inflammatory polyposis, or pseudopolyposis. The term FP was first coined by Appelman et al. who used it to describe a syndrome involving the radiographic appearance of numerous long slender worm-like or filiform defects in the colon. The pathogenesis of FP is uncertain. However, FP was generally thought to be associated w...
Colorectal carcinoma ranks third in frequency among all cancers. With regards to cancer related mortality, colorectal carcinoma is known as the second cause (Levin et al., 2003). This condition accounts for 10% of all cancer related mortalities in women and men. Overall, lifetime risk for the development of colorectal carcinoma is still 5%. (Eddy, 1990) The wellknown risk factors are age, inher...
We present a thirty five years old woman with a family history of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) (sister, brother and father) and a four-month history of progressive and constant right iliac fossa pain accompanied by weight loss of 5 kg. The patient does not refer nausea, vomiting or fever. The abdomen was soft, painless, without other signs of peritoneal irritation or palpable masses. In the res...
Fundic gland polyps (FGPs) are the most common type of gastric polyps (up to 50%). They are found in up to 0.8-1.9 % of the general population, and in 40-84 % of the patients suffering from familial polyposis syndromes. They might be sporadic or associated to polyposis syndromes. When the former, they should be considered exclusively benign lesions, and possibly related to the chronic use of pr...
INTRODUCTION AND AIMS Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited pathology characterized by gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps, predominantly in the small bowel, and pigmented mucocutaneous lesions. Guidelines suggest polypectomy with a balloon-assisted enteroscope when polyps are larger than 10mm. Complications in adults can be as high as 6.8%, but there is little information...
Introduction: Colonic ganglioneuromas are classified as hamartomatous polyps that are composed of ganglion cells, nerve fibers, and enteric nervous system cells. The GNs of the gastrointestinal tract can be classified into three groups based on the size and the number of polyps: polypoid GN, ganglioneuromatous polyposis, and diffuse ganglioneuromatosis. Polypoid GNs, seen in patients with Cowde...
