The objectives were to determine the effects of short-term feeding of a toxic endophyte (Neotyphodium coenophialum)-infected tall fescue seed (Festuca arundinacea, cultivar 'Kentucky 31') on fecal shedding and intestinal concentrations of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and the concentrations of prolactin, cortisol, and NEFA in experimentally inoculated ewes. Twelve ewes (mean BW = 46 +/- 2 kg) were f...

background: enterohemorrhagic escherichia coli (ehec) o157:h7 is an infectious zoonotic pathogen causing human infections. these infections, in some cases, can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome and its life-threatening complications and even death worldwide. the first intimate bacterial adhesion, intimin (i), with its own receptor translocated intimin receptor (tir) and e. coli secreted protein...

Escherichia coli O26:H11 strains were able to outgrow O157:H7 companion strains in planktonic and biofilm phases and also to effectively compete with precolonized O157:H7 cells to establish themselves in mixed biofilms. E. coli O157:H7 strains were unable to displace preformed O26:H11 biofilms. Therefore, E. coli O26:H11 remains a potential risk in food safety.

Escherichia coli morphotype E flagellar filaments have a characteristic surface pattern of short-pitch loops when examined by electron microscopy. Seven of the 50 known E. coli H (flagellar antigen) serotypes (H1, H7, H12, H23, H45, H49, and H51) produce morphotype E filaments. Polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify flagellin structural (fliC) genes from E. coli strains producing morphot...

Outbreaks associated with leafy greens have focused attention on the transfer of human pathogens to these commodities during harvest with commercial equipment. Attachment of Escherichia coli O157:H7 on new or rusty spinach harvester blades immersed in spinach extract or 10% tryptic soy broth (TSB) was investigated. Bacteriophages specific for E. coli O157:H7 were evaluated to kill cells attache...

The capacity to distinguish between living and dead cells is an important, but often unrealized, attribute of rapid detection methods for foodborne pathogens. In this study, the numbers of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 after inoculation onto Romaine lettuce plants and on plastic (abiotic) surfaces were measured over time by culturing, and quantitative PCR (qPCR), propidium monoazid...

Escherichia coli are commensal bacteria that can account for up to 1% of the bacterial population of the gut. Ruminant animals are reservoirs of the pathogenic bacteria E. colil strain O157:H7, and approximately 30% of feedlot cattle shed E. coli O157:H7. Feedlot and high-producing dairy cattle are fed high grain rations in order to increase feed efficiency. When cattle are fed high grain ratio...

Since the mid-1990s, the beef industry has used a process called test and hold, wherein beef trim and ground beef are tested to keep products contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 out of commerce. Current O157:H7 detection methods rely on a threshold level of bacterial growth for detection, which is dependent on the growth medium used. Twelve media were examined for growth and doubling tim...

In the present study, inhibitory effects of the hydrosols of thyme, black cumin, sage, rosemary and bay leaf were investigated against Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157:H7 inoculated to apple and carrots (at the ratio of 5.81 and 5.81 log cfu/g for S. Typhimurium, and 5.90 and 5.70 log cfu/g for E. coli O157:H7 on to apple and carrot, respectively). After the inoculation of S. Ty...
