There are multiple reports of foreign bodies inserted into the lower urinary tract. We report the case of an incidentally discovered foreign body identified within the bladder in a male patient presenting with a radio antenna protruding from the urethra attached to a head set. On workup patient was found to have an additional foreign body within the bladder and second radiolucent object within ...
The pathogenesis of uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is complex and influenced by many host biological and behavioural factors and by properties of the infecting uropathogens. Most uncomplicated UTIs in women are not associated with underlying functional or anatomical abnormalities of the urinary tract, whereas sexual intercourse, spermicide use, a history of recurrent UTI and recent...
Tissue regeneration is the focal point of intensive research efforts that are supported by the increasing number of stem cell sources available. In particular, multipotent mesenchymal stem cells feature many functional properties attractive for regenerative medicine strategies, including their paracrine activity. Adipose-Derived Stromal/Stem Cells (ASCs) have been the focus of extensive work re...
Haemophilus influenzae isolates recovered from the genitourinary (GU) tract were shown to have a significantly different biotype distribution compared with respiratory tract isolates. Biotype IV strains were recovered more commonly from the GU tract, and most strains were non-serotypable. Antibiotic-susceptible strains isolated from the GU tract more frequently harbored plasmids of less than 10...
We report a case of a patient who developed cystitis caused by non-serogroup O1 Vibrio cholerae after swimming in the Chesapeake Bay. Treatment was empirical, with complete symptomatic resolution. Genitourinary tract infections by Vibrio spp. are uncommon but should be considered when cystitis occurs after saltwater exposure in appropriate geographic regions.
Genitourinary amoebiasis is a rare form of kidney and urinary tract infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Here, we describe the first case of unusual infection caused by E. histolytica in Bueng Kan province, northeast, Thailand. A 63-year-old female patient was diagnosed as acute pyelonephritis. E. histotolytica trophozoites were accidentally found in urine collected from a catheter.
Bacteremia due to Actinomyces neuii has been reported in the literature 14 times. A. neuii is an endogenous organism that has been cultured in clinical specimens of the genitourinary tract; we are reporting a unique case of A. neuii postoperative testicular abscess with bacteremia which was successfully treated with surgery and a short course of parenteral antimicrobials.
