Since CO(2) is carbonic acid gas, it will decrease the pH if added to water. Therefore, a simple test can determine whether CO(2) is present in a gas mixture. If the pH of gassed water does not change significantly, then CO(2) is not present in the gas.

Some properties of gas mixtures, composed predominately of helium and lesser amounts of CO2 and isobutane, were measured in a prototype drift chamber. The studies are motivated by the desire to reduce the multiple scattering inside the drift chamber at future high-luminosity, low-energy facilities such as 4 factories, T/charm factories, and B factories. The low atomic number of helium greatly r...

In our previous work [Sens. Actuator B: Chem. 203 1-8 (2014)], a ultrasonic sensor has been proposed to detect gas compositions by the acoustic spectral peak location. However, the effective relaxation area constructed by existing theoretical model cannot match the detection method when there are more than one strong relaxational components in gas mixture. A method that calculates the relaxatio...

Explosive forming is one of the unconventional techniques in which, most commonly, the water is used as the pressure transmission medium. One of the newest methods in explosive forming is gas detonation forming which uses a normal shock wave derived of gas detonation, to form sheet metals. For this purpose a detonation is developed from the reaction of H2+O2 mixture in a long cylindrical detona...

Non-freon gas mixtures (Ar/iso-C4H10) were tested as the chamber gas for 1 and 2 mm gas gap Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with float glass as the resistive electrodes, operated in the streamer mode. With the narrower (1 mm) gas gap, streamer charge is reduced (B1=3), which reduces the dead time (and dead area), associated with each streamer, improving the detection efficiency. The best perfor...

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is widely utilized in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). However, part of SF6 decomposes into different components under partial discharge (PD) conditions. Previous research has shown that the gas responses of intrinsic and 4 Å-type molecular sieve-deposited multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to SOF2 and SO2F2, two important decomposition components of SF6, are not obvio...

In theory, setting an infrared multi-gas analyser to measure a volatile anaesthetic different from that in the sampled gas mixture may cause interference with carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide readings. The theory was investigated during evaluation of the Dräger Cicero EM anaesthetic workstation for the Medical Devices Agency. Interference occurred as predicted, and was most pronounced when the ...

High incident energy hydrogen and/or oxygen cations are generated by electron cyclotron resonance system, and then used to highly efficiently modify multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The effects of various H2/O2 gas compositions on the modification process are studied. A systematic characterization method utilizing a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron...
