The friction coefficient between a guide and a tape sample is determined experimentally as a function of nominal tension, speed and guide radius. A comparative study between metal particulate and metal evaporated tape is performed. The tape/guide contact pressure correlated to the experimental results. Tape temperature measurements are compared with the experimentally obtained friction coeffici...

We demonstrate measurement and control of nanoscale single-asperity friction by using cantilever probes featuring an in situ solid-state heater in contact with silicon oxide substrates. The heater temperature was varied between 25 and 790 °C. By using a low thermal conductivity sample, silicon oxide, we are able to vary tip temperatures over a broad range from 25 ± 2 to 255 ± 25 °C. In ambient ...

Nano-object additives are used in tribological applications as well as in various applications in liquids requiring controlled manipulation and targeting. On the macroscale, nanoparticles in solids and liquids have been shown to reduce friction and wear. On the nanoscale, atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies have been performed in single- and multiple-nanoparticle contact, in dry environments,...

The viscoelastic deformation of tire rubber by road surface asperities was modeled by the rolling contact between a Kelvin solid and a surface motif, which is the part of surface profiles between two peaks. Stress and strain calculations showed that contact losses might occur locally, depending on the rolling speed, the viscoelastic properties of the Kelvin solid and the geometry of the motif. ...

Many aspects of both grip function and tactile perception depend on complex frictional interactions occurring in the contact zone of the finger pad, which is the subject of the current review. While it is well established that friction plays a crucial role in grip function, its exact contribution for discriminatory touch involving the sliding of a finger pad is more elusive. For texture discrim...

We develop two new continuum contact models for coupled adhesion and friction, and discuss them in the context of existing models proposed in the literature. Our new models are able to describe sliding friction even under tensile normal forces, which seems reasonable for certain adhesion mechanisms. In contrast, existing continuum models for combined adhesion and friction typically include slid...

After falls, skiers or snowboarders often slide on the slope and may collide with obstacles. Thus, the skier’s friction on snow is an important factor to reduce incidence and severity of impact injuries. The purpose of this study was to measure snow friction of different fabrics of ski garments with respect to roughness, speed, and contact pressure. Three types of fabrics were investigated: a c...

We present a simple model for the friction of two solid bodies moving against each other. In a self consistent way we can obtain the dependence of the macro-scopic friction force as a function of the driving velocity, the normal force and the ruggedness of the surfaces in contact. Our results are discussed in the context of friction laws used in earthquake models.
