The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene has been associated with prostate cancer, although previous results are somewhat equivocal. To further study this, we did a family-based case-control study (N = 918) of the association between prostate cancer and six common VDR variants: Cdx2, FokI, BsmI, ApaI, TaqI , and the poly-A microsatellite. Looking at each variant alone, only FokI and ApaI were associat...

We studied three vitamin D receptor gene (VDR) polymorphisms (BsmI, TaqI, FokI) in a case-control study of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The BsmI B and TaqI t alleles were associated with an increased risk of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. These findings suggest that variants in VDR may influence lymphomagenesis.

Vitamin D plays an important role in cell growth and differentiation and is proposed to protect against cancer initiation and/or progression. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) has a thymine/cytosine (T/C) polymorphism located in the first of two potential start (ATG) codons that can be detected by a RFLP using the endonuclease FokI. The C variant, which lacks the first ATG, results in a shorter VDR ...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE Lead has a negative effect on the central nervous system (CNS), inter alia indicated by disturbance of posture. However, knowledge of the CNS effects at low exposure is insufficient. Individuals differ in vulnerability, possibly because of genetic predisposition. Polymorphisms in the δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes may modif...

BACKGROUND/AIMS Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is a common and dangerous form of extrapulmonary TB with unclear mechanisms in its occurrence and progression. This study investigated the clinical significances of bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4), osteopontin (OPN), and vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism, mRNA and protein expression in spinal TB patients. METHODS BMP-4 and OPN gene polymo...

BACKGROUND In patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms and haplotypes are reported to be associated with survival. We hypothesized that a similar association would be observed in patients with head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC). METHODS In a post-hoc analysis of our previous prospective cohort study, VDR polymorphisms including Cdx2 ...

BACKGROUND The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene has been identified as a candidate gene for susceptibility to Parkinson's disease (PD), but results from genetic association studies to date are inconsistent. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of published case-control studies to evaluate the association of the extensively studied VDR ApaI (G/T), BsmI (G/A), FokI (C/T), and TaqI (T/C) gene polymorph...

Background Recent studies have reported the associations between vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms and colorectal cancer (CRC), but the results were not always consistent. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether VDR polymorphisms are associated with CRC susceptibility. Materials And Methods Studies on the associations between VDR polymorphisms and CRC were retrieved from the Web of S...

BACKGROUND The FokI vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphism results in different translation initiation sites on VDR. In the VDRff variant, initiation of translation occurs at the first ATG site, giving rise to a full length VDR protein of 427 amino acids. Conversely, in the VDRFF variant, translation begins at the second ATG site, resulting in a truncated protein with three less amino acids. Epi...
