Adding a small amount of an immiscible fluid to a particle suspension can lead to particle bridging and network formation. This effect occurs both if the secondary fluid wets the particles better or worse than the bulk fluid. The capillary bridging phenomenon can be used to stabilize particle suspensions and precisely tune their rheological properties. This allows stable food products to be cre...

An efficient multigrid-FEM method for the detailed simulation of solid-liquid two phase flows with large number of moving particles is presented. An explicit fictitious boundary method based on a FEM background grid which covers the whole computational domain and can be chosen independently from the particles of arbitrary shape, size and number is used to deal with the interactions between the ...

It is proposed that the inertial range clustering of small heavy particles in fluid turbulence occurs as a result of the sweep-stick mechanism which causes inertial particles to cluster so as to mimic the clusters of points where the fluid acceleration is perpendicular to the direction of highest contraction between neighboring particles. Direct numerical simulations of inertial particles subje...

Colloidal particles or nanoparticles, with equal affinity for two fluids, are known to adsorb irreversibly to the fluid-fluid interface. We present large-scale computer simulations of the demixing of a binary solvent containing such particles. The newly formed interface sequesters the colloidal particles; as the interface coarsens, the particles are forced into close contact by interfacial tens...

Dynamic focusing of particles can be used to centre particles in a fluid stream, ensuring the passage of the particles through a specified detection volume. This paper describes a method for focusing nanoparticles using dielectrophoresis. The method differs from other focusing methods in that it manipulates the particles and not the fluid. Experimental focusing is demonstrated for a range of di...

First order Fermi acceleration at astrophysical shocks is often invoked as a mechanism for the generation of non-thermal particles. This mechanism is especially simple in the approximation that the accelerated particles behave like test particles, not affecting the shocked fluid. Many complications enter the calculations when the accelerated particles have a backreaction on the fluid, in which ...

A light and electron microscopic study was made of lymphatic tissues from 2 dogs with reticulum cell leukemia. Virus-like particles were found in both dogs. Cultures of leukemic cells were established from both dogs and 1 culture contained numerous C type virus-like particles. Mycoplasma canis was recovered from the pleural fluid and pleural fluid cell culture of 1 dog. Com parison of this myco...

We model filters as two-dimensional networks of channels. As a suspension (fluid with particles) flows through the filter, particles clog channels. We assume that there is no flow through clogged channels. In this paper, we compute a sharp upper bound on the number of channels that can clog before fluid can no longer flow through the filter.

We use the bailout embeddings of three-dimensional volume-preserving maps to study qualitatively the dynamics of small spherical neutrally buoyant impurities suspended in a time-periodic incompressible fluid flow. The accumulation of impurities in tubular vortical structures, the detachment of particles from fluid trajectories near hyperbolic invariant lines, and the formation of nontrivial thr...
