The blazar PKS 1510-089 was the first of the flat spectrum radio quasar type, which had been detected simultaneously by a ground based Cherenkov telescope (H.E.S.S.) and the LAT instrument on board the Fermi satellite. Given the strong broad line region emission defining this blazar class, and the resulting high optical depth for VHE (E > 100 GeV) γ-rays, it was surprising to detect VHE emissio...

Coherent emission appears to be a common phenomenon on radio-active late-type stars. Solar radio flare emissions below 3 GHz are rich and varied, arising from coherent processes in the upper solar atmosphere (Dulk 1985; Isliker & Benz 1994). Studies of decimetric radio emission from M dwarf flare stars have led to discovery of high brightness temperature, highly circularly polarized bursts (Bas...

We have used high-resolution radio observations to study the physical parameters of a flaring loop. The loop is visible at radio wavelengths due to gyrosynchrotron emission by nonthermal electrons (energies typically above 500 keV) accelerated by the flare. We are able to measure the loop thickness and length with a precision better than 1 00. We find that the loop length increases from about 6...

With a direct demodulation method, we have reanalyzed the data from the COMPTEL observation of PKS0528+134 during the 1993 March flare in γ-rays. Our results show that during the flare γ-rays were detected at a level approximately 2.4-3.8 times higher than the observed intensity in two earlier COMPTEL observations VP 0 and VP 1 in the energy range 3 MeV to 30 MeV. The 3-30 MeV time variability ...

Self-Organised Criticality (SOC), embedded in cellular automata models, has been so far viewed as an attractive phenomenological approach for studying the statistical behaviour of flaring activity in solar active regions. Well-known statistical properties of flares, like the robust scaling laws seen in the distribution functions of characteristic parameters of the events, as well as correlation...

BACKGROUND Toothbrushes are over-the-counter products; therefore, no special instruction is given to users when they purchase. There are scarce published studies that have investigated about how often toothbrushes should be replaced. Thus, this study aimed to verify the impact of the Progressive Toothbrush Bristle Flaring on plaque control efficacy of toothbrush. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty ...

We present a parameter study of self-consistent models of protoplanetary disks around Herbig AeBe stars. We use the code developed by Dullemond and Dominik, which solves the 2D radiative transfer problem including an iteration for the vertical hydrostatic structure of the disk. This grid of models will be used for several studies on disk emission and mineralogy in followup papers. In this paper...

This paper describes a study of 11 flaring sunspots, for which on flare days the relative positions of flares andsunspots have been determined from data provided by the Climax and the Mount Wilson Observatories. For eachspot group all data, including the magnetic polarities and field strengths, were projected to the center of the sun'sdisc and combined. The maps show that flaring...

Repeatedly flaring X-ray binaries have recently been discovered in NGC 4697 by Sivakoff and collaborators. We show that these flares can be explained as the result of eccentric binaries in globular clusters which accrete more rapidly at periastron than during the rest of the binary orbit. We show that theoretical timescales for producing eccentricities and circularising the binaries are consist...

The Rieger periods are solar cycles with a time scale of months, which are present in both flaring activity and sunspot occurrence. These short-term periodicities, tentatively explained by equatorially trapped Rossby-type waves modulating the emergence of magnetic flux at the surface, are considered a peculiar and not yet fully understood solar phenomenon. We chose a stellar system with solar c...
