We demonstrate a Tm-doped fiber laser system producing ~300 fs pulses with 1 μJ energy, corresponding to peak powers greater than 3 MW. Pulses of 150 fs with 30 nm spectral bandwidth and 3 nJ pulse energy are generated in a Raman-soliton self-frequency shift amplifier, then stretched to ~160 ps using a chirped Bragg grating. The 60 MHz oscillator repetition rate is reduced to 100 kHz using an e...

A handheld line information reader and a line information generator were developed for the efficient management of optical communication lines. The line information reader consists of a photo diode, trans-impedance amplifier, voltage amplifier, microcontroller unit, display panel, and communication modules. The line information generator consists of a laser diode, laser driving circuits, microc...

Spatially resolved spectral interferometry is used to measure the mode content of a Yb-doped photonic-crystal fiber rod amplifier with a 2300 μm(2) mode area. The technique, known as S(2) imaging, was adapted for the short fiber amplifier at full power and revealed a small amount of a copolarized LP(11) mode. Simulations illustrate the potential for weak mode suppression in this fiber and agree...

A theoretical model for laser cooled continuous-wave fiber amplifier is presented. The amplification process takes place in the Tm 3+ -doped core of the fluoride ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2LaF3-AlF3-NaF) glass fiber. The cooling process takes place in the Yb 3+ :ZBLAN fiber cladding. It is shown that for each value of the pump power and the amplified signal there is a distribution of the concentration of ...

A mid-IR amplifier consisting of a tapered chalcogenide fiber coupled to an Er3þ-doped chalcogenide microsphere has been optimized via a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach. More precisely, a dedicated three-dimensional numerical model, based on the coupled mode theory and solving the rate equations, has been integrated with the PSO procedure. The rate equations have included the main tr...

A theoretical study of active mode-locking fiber loop laser using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) was presented in this paper. The effects of linewidth broadening factor of SOA on active mode-locking were investigated originally. The relations between parameters of output pulse series and the critical parameters of SOA and other elements in fiber loop were obtained. 2002 Elsevier Science ...

We study the dependence on fiber birefringence of the bit-error rate (BER) caused by amplifier noise in a linear optical fiber telecommunication system. We show that the probability-distribution function of the BER obtained by averaging over many realizations of birefringent disorder has an extended tail that corresponds to anomalously large values of BER. We specifically discuss the dependence...

In the paper, a 3 µm mid-infrared (MIR) high energy ultrafast Er:ZBLAN fiber laser and amplification system is presented. The 3µm seed pulses were generated through an Yb-doped ultrafast fiber laser pumped optical parametric amplification (OPA). A pulse energy of 12.4 µJ is generated at a repetition rate of 100 kHz with a pulse duration of 103 fs. A Er:ZBLAN fiber amplifier was used to further ...

A new two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) is presented, which is composed of two-section high nonlinear fibers (HNLFs). Genetic algorithm (GA), a multivariate stochastic optimization algorithm is applied to optimize parameters of two fiber segments, such as the length and dispersion coefficient of fiber. A broadband FOPA with twosection HNLFs is obtained using optimum design para...
