This letter challenges the concept that the metallic iron (Fe) surface contributes directly to the process of micro-organism inactivation in aqueous solutions. It is shown that any antimicrobial properties of Fe is related to the cycle of expansion/contraction accompanying aqueous iron corrosion. This demonstration corroborates the concept that aqueous contaminant removal in the presence of Fe ...

Recent studies of bacterial Fe(II) oxidation at circumneutral pH by a newly-isolated lithotrophic β-Proteobacterium (strain TW2) are reviewed in relation to a conceptual model that accounts for the influence of biogenic Fe(III)-binding ligands on patterns of Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) oxide deposition in opposing gradients of Fe(II) and O2. The conceptual model envisions complexation of Fe(II...

The mechanisms for Fe(III) oxide reduction by Geobacter species are of interest because Geobacter species have been shown to play an important role in Fe(III) oxide reduction in a diversity of environments in which Fe(III) reduction is a geochemically significant process. Geobacter species specifically express pili during growth on Fe(III) oxide compared with growth on soluble chelated Fe(III),...

principal skarn deposits along the northern margin of the ahar batholith from west to east include mazraeh, vine and gowdoul skarn deposits. among these skarn deposits, the mazraeh cu-fe skarn deposit is the most typical skarn deposit in the nw iran. this skarn deposit is located 5 km. north of mazraeh village and 20 km north of ahar town. the origin and development of the skarn can be related ...

Galvanic displacement processes are employed in water-in-oil microemulsions to deposit gold nanoclusters selectively on Si surfaces and sidewalls. The gold clusters then serve as catalysts to achieve selective growth of vertically and laterally aligned Si nanowire arrays by chemical vapor deposition via the vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism. The size of the gold clusters is shown to have a go...

Copper on gold forms a monolayer deposit via underpotential deposition. For gold particles adsorbed at a liquid-liquid interface this results in a uniform one monolayer thick shell. This approach offers a new route for the uniform functionalisation of nanoparticles and presents a way to probe fundamental processes that underlie nanoparticle synthesis.

The effect of hydrogen on the rate of phototrophic Fe(II) oxidation by two species of purple bacteria was measured at two different bicarbonate concentrations. Hydrogen slowed Fe(II) oxidation to varying degrees depending on the bicarbonate concentration, but even the slowest rate of Fe(II) oxidation remained on the same order of magnitude as that estimated to have been necessary to deposit the...

Fifteen commercial titania (titanium(IV) oxide; TiO 2) powders were modified with gold by photodeposition to prepare photocatalysts that work under irradiation with light in the visible range (vis). The gold-modified titania (Au/TiO 2) powders were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), scanning transmission microscopy (STE...

Effects of Fe-chlorophyllin on the growth of wheat root were investigated in this study. We found that Fe-chlorophyllin can promote root growth. The production of nitric oxide in wheat root was detected using DAF-2DA fluorescent emission. The intensity of fluorescent in the presence of 0.1 mg/L Fe-chlorophyllin was near to that observed with the positive control of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), t...
