The cloning of two novel fatty acid (FA) transport proteins, FA transport protein (FATP) and FA translocase (FAT), has recently been reported; however, little is known about their in vivo regulation. Endotoxin [lipopolysaccharide (LPS)], tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and interleukin-1 (IL-1) stimulate adipose tissue lipolysis and enhance hepatic lipogenesis and reesterification while suppressing...

Paraoxonase is an enzyme associated with HDL in human serum that hydrolyzes oxidized phospholipids and inhibits LDL oxidation, which is an important step in atherogenesis. In animals, addition of oxidized lipids to the circulation reduces paraoxonase activity, and diets rich in oxidized fat accelerate the development of atherosclerosis. The current randomized, crossover study was designed to co...

Our pilot study in a young adult Australian cohort aimed to investigate potential associations between CD36 polymorphisms (rs1527479 and rs1984112), fat oxidation and cardiovascular disease risk. CD36 genotype was associated with fat oxidation during sub-maximal exercise, resting heart rate and blood pressure, indicating increased chronic disease risk in this otherwise healthy cohort.

We examined the effects of (-)-Hydroxycitrate (HCA) ingestion on fat oxidation during moderate intensity exercise in untrained men. Six subjects ingested 500 mg of HCA or a placebo for 5 days and did endurance exercise. Blood FFA concentrations were significantly increased and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) decreased by HCA ingestion. These results suggested short-term HCA ingestion increases...

In 134 out of 180 perirenal fat samples (74%) derived from Japanese necropsy cases aged from 1 month to 86 years, the brown fat tissue persisted in variable amounts. Brown fat cells were classified into 6 types: Type 1 cells are fat-depleted cells filled with granular cytoplasm and are believed to be produced after oxidation of fat for heat production. Type 2 cells are small-locular cells suita...

BACKGROUND Prolonged postprandial hypertriglyceridemia is a potential risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. In the context of obesity, this is associated with a chronic imbalance of lipid partitioning oriented toward storage and not toward β-oxidation. OBJECTIVE We tested the hypothesis that the physical structure of fat in a meal can modify the absorption, chylomicron transport, and furth...

When using (13)C tracer to measure plasma fat oxidation, an acetate recovery factor should be determined in every subject to correct for label sequestration. Less is known regarding the acetate recovery factor for dietary fatty acid oxidation. We compiled data from six studies to investigate the determinants of the dietary acetate recovery factor (dARF) at rest and after physical activity inter...

The present investigation was performed to elucidate if the non-erythropoietic ergogenic effect of a recombinant erythropoietin treatment results in an impact on skeletal muscle mitochondrial and whole body fatty acid oxidation capacity during exercise, myoglobin concentration and angiogenesis. Recombinant erythropoietin was administered by subcutaneous injections (5000 IU) in six healthy male ...

For both respiration and combustion, the energy loss difference between glucose and fat oxidation often is referenced to the efficiency of the fuel. Yet, the addition of anaerobic metabolism with ATP resynthesis to complete respiratory glucose oxidation further contributes to energy loss in the form of entropy changes that are not measured or quantified by calorimetry; combustion and respirator...

It is well known that adaptation to a fat-rich carbohydrate-poor diet results in lower resting muscle glycogen content and a higher rate of fat oxidation during exercise when compared with a carbohydrate-rich diet. The net effect of such an adaptation could potentially be a sparing of muscle glycogen, and because muscle glycogen storage is coupled to endurance performance, it is possible that a...
