Histologic grading schemes for canine inflammatory conditions are sparse, and in the case of the canine pancreas, have not been previously described. In a previous study, we determined that histologic lesions of the exocrine pancreas occurred much more frequently than gross lesions. The intention of the current study was to develop a histologic grading scheme for nonneoplastic lesions following...
Case 1. A male infant was admitted to hospital on August 4, 1949, at the age of 3 weeks because his mother had noticed a number of small reddish-purple 'lumps' on his thighs during the week preceding his admission. He was the third child of healthy parents, the other children being well. His weight at birth was 9 lb. 2 oz. The delivery was normal, labour having lasted 24 hours, but the infant s...
Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) in infants producing severe hypercalcemia is a life-threatening emergency. Pathophysiology may include enhanced gastrointestinal calcium absorption and bone resorption. We treated an infant with SFN and serum calcium of 15 mg/dL with prednisolone and low-dose zoledronic acid. Serum calcium promptly normalized without rebound hypocalcemia, and redosing of zoledron...
abscesses—particularly subdiaphragmatic—are difficult to detect utilizing this modality. In ultrasonography on the other hand, the presence of the liver is quite useful, for it dis places bowel that might otherwise block sound transmission due to its gas content, and thus renders this area ideal for ultrasonic search. Similarly, in the pelvis, the presence of a filled bladder allows detaile...
We report a case of subcutaneous fat necrosis of a newborn child which appeared 9 days after birth and was cured without any complications. We propose the reclassification of the etiological factors accompanying this lesion by classifying them in a plurietiological syndrome with some basic or essential factors and other causative factors.
A 66-year-old man with rectal cancer was found to have an incidental ring-like lesion in the left rectovesical pouch. Histology revealed an encapsulated fat necrosis. Intraperitoneal encapsulated fat necroses are postulated to be a result of infarcted epiploic appendages resulting in a free-floating lesion.
Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFN) is an uncommon disease that affects newborns who have suffered from tissue hypoxia during or following delivery. This disease appears during the first weeks of life. It consists of indurate, erythematous or purple-erythematous nodules and plaques in the skin. Histology of a biopsy specimen shows granulomatous necrosis in the subcutis with radial cr...
