IT is not easy for beginners to understand the actions of the extrinsic ocular muscles by simple reference to the geometry of their arrangement and attachments. A working model has been designed which has been found useful for demonstrating these actions, both singly and in groups. The requirements of a satisfactory model are that it should be large enough for movements to be easily seen and th...

PURPOSE To create a binocular statistical eye model based on previously measured ocular biometric data. METHODS Thirty-nine parameters were determined for a group of 127 healthy subjects (37 male, 90 female; 96.8% Caucasian) with an average age of 39.9 ± 12.2 years and spherical equivalent refraction of -0.98 ± 1.77 D. These parameters described the biometry of both eyes and the subjects' age...

This paper presents results from the first rational model of eye movement control in reading to make predictions for the full range of the eye movement record. The model identifies the text through Bayesian inference and makes eye movement decisions to maximize the efficiency of text identification, going beyond leading approaches which select model parameters to maximize the fit to human data....

A 65–yrs-old man referred for an ocular discomfort and red eye. The clinical diagnosis was leech in the left eye and its species confirmed as being Limnatis nilotica. Ocular leech infestation should be considered in patients with a history of swimming or washing their face in streams and lakes. Attention should also be given to ocular leech infestation in the differential diagnosis of ocular tr...

Letter series completion problems (LSC-problems) are common tasks to measure peoples’ ability in problem solving. The process of inductive reasoning in solving such problems was investigated in an experiment by the means of eye movement analysis. We developed an eye movement model on the basis of a process model by Simon and Kotovsky (1963). Our model assigns specific eye movements to three dif...

This paper presents a generative model of eye-hand coordination. We use numerical optimization to solve for the joint behavior of an eye and two hands, deriving a predicted motion pattern from first principles, without imposing heuristics. We model the planar scene as a POMDP with 17 continuous state dimensions. Belief-space optimization is facilitated by using a nominal-belief heuristic, where...

Overview Normal cognitive function requires coordination between perception and action. However, both action and perception pose enormous challenges to our scientific understanding, and, as a result they are often studied separately, with experimental paradigms carefully crafted to tease them apart (e.g., gaze fixation). We present an interpretive model that addresses both faculties within a si...

While existing eye detection and tracking algorithms can work reasonably well in a controlled environment, they tend to perform poorly under real world imaging conditions where the lighting produces shadows and the person’s eyes can be occluded by e.g. glasses or makeup. As a result, pixel clusters associated with the eyes tend to be grouped together with background-features. This problem occur...

We propose a sequential information maximization model as a general strategy for programming eye movements. The model reconstructs high-resolution visual information from a sequence of fixations, taking into account the fall-off in resolution from the fovea to the periphery. From this framework we get a simple rule for predicting fixation sequences: after each fixation, fixate next at the locat...
