The Adaptive RED proposed by Feng et al . [5] is shown to have small packet delay and queue length variation for long-life TCP traffic such as FTP connection with a large file size. However, a great portion of Internet traffic is shortlife web and UDP traffic. Most web traffic has a small file size and its TCP session is mainly operated in the slow start phase with a small congestion window siz...
We consider a multiclass preemptive-resume priority queue with Poisson arrivals and general service times. We derive explicit expressions for the discounted expected and long-run average weighted queue lengths and switching costs, the latter one only in the case of exponential service times. We illustrate our results with numerical calculations.
For a discrete-time finite-state Markov chain, we develop an adaptive importance sampling scheme to estimate the expected total cost before hitting a set of terminal states. This scheme updates the change of measure at every transition using constant or decreasing step-size stochastic approximation. The updates are shown to concentrate asymptotically in a neighborhood of the desired zero varian...
For the GI0GI01 queue we show that the scaled queue size converges to reflected Brownian motion in a critical queue and converges to reflected Brownian motion with drift for a sequence of subcritical queuing models that approach a critical model+ Instead of invoking the topological argument of the usual continuousmapping approach, we give a probabilistic argument using Skorokhod embeddings in B...
We study a blood testing procedure for detecting viruses like HIV, HBV and HCV. In this procedure, blood samples go through two screening steps. The first test is ELISA (antibody Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay). The portions of blood which are found not contaminated in this first phase are tested in groups through PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). The ELISA test is less sensitive than the PC...
solve the problem of time-optimal network queue control: what are the input data rates that make network queue sizes converge to their ideal size in the least possible time after a disturbance while still maintaining maximum link utilization at all times, even in the transient? The problem is non-trivial especially because of the vast possible heterogeneity in packet propagation delays in the n...
The Size Effect is the tendency for small firms to earn higher returns than large corporations. We find for the UK this effect is expected in the sense that small firms on average have higher fundamental growth than large corporations. Our analysis suggests that the magnitude of the expected size effect has declined for recent decades. There is some evidence the decline in expected size effect ...
Today’s market share of Intelligent Network (IN) service is growing rapidly in wireless networks due to the rapid advances in wireless telecommunication and IN technology. To guarantee network independent IN services, mobility of IN service subscribers has to be taken into account. This paper proposes new designs of Global Service Logic for the IN service enhancement, which increase call comple...
We present a Monte Carlo method for approximating the minimax expected size (MES) confidence set for a parameter known to belong to a compact set. Size refers to the measure of the confidence set; the measure can be indexed by the true parameter value, which allows the confidence procedure to be tailored for specific scientific goals. As the number of iterations increases, the Monte Carlo estim...
