The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common human viruses, infecting more than 90% of the world’s adult population. In some individuals the interplay between EBV replication, latency and immune control can be disrupted and evokes prolonged proliferation of EBV-infected lymphocytes and their malignant transformation. Since its discovery as the first human tumor virus, EBV has been imp...
PURPOSE To evaluate the long-term prognostic impact of plasma Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA concentration measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RTQ-PCR) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS AND MATERIALS Epstein-Barr virus DNA was retrospectively measured from stock plasma of 152 biopsy-proven NPC patients wit...
objective: assessment of subgingival human cytomegalovirus (hcmv) and epstein barr virus (ebv-1) in subjects with aggressive periodontitis. materials and methods: samples were obtained from plaques formed in subgingival regions of 26 aggressive periodontitis patients. all specimens were submitted to polymerase chain reaction in order to detect hcmv and ebv-1. results: hcmv and ebv-1 were observ...
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) plays important roles in the origin and the progression of human carcinomas, e.g. diffuse large B cell tumors, T cell lymphomas, etc. Discovering EBV targeted human genes and signaling pathways is vital to understand EBV tumorigenesis. In this study we propose a noise-tolerant homolog knowledge transfer method to reconstruct functional protein-protein interactions (PPI)...
Aim-To identify the possible role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), in Chinese patients, in the pathogenesis of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods-Formalin fixed, paraffin wax embedded tissues from 74 cases of oesophagealsquamous cellcarcinoma (28 with well differentiated, 27 with moderately differentiated and 18 with poorly differentiated carcinomas) were analysed for EBV using in situ hy...
Older patients are more susceptible to severe Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related infectious mononucleosis (IM). This condition may increase in industrialized countries where primary EBV infection occurs later in life. Between 1990 and 2004, 38 patients were admitted to our department with EBV-related IM. Two patients died. The annual incidence increased significantly (r = 0.623; P = 0.013).
Rapid diagnosis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated infectious mononucleosis was compared by using nine kits and EBV-specific serology. Specific antibodies indicative of primary EBV infection were detected in 46 of 108 (43%) serum samples of infectious mononucleosis patients. The sensitivities and specificities of the rapid kits varied from 63 to 84% and 84 to 100%, respectively.
The most prevalent non-traumatic debilitating illness affecting young individuals is multiple sclerosis (MS) (2). Both industrialized and emerging nations are seeing an increase in the incidence prevalence of MS, whose underlying etiology still unknown. In addition to some well-known environmental variables, such as vitamin D or ultraviolet B light (UVB) exposure, ...
The recent derivation of otherwise isogenic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) recombinants carrying or lacking the EBV small RNA (EBER) genes enabled us to test whether EBERs are similar to adenovirus VA RNAs in modulating interferon (IFN) effects on virus infection. EBER-positive and -negative EBV recombinants did not differ in their sensitivity to alpha interferon (IFN-alpha)- or IFN-gamma-mediated in...
