Carbapenem susceptibility in Enterobacteriaceae (M9921, M9959) revealed the presence of MBLs bla(VIM-2) (M9959) and bla(IMP-8) (M9921), both as first cassettes of class-1-integrons. ESBL bla(PER-2) was detected in both strains and M9921 also harboured qnrB10, aac(6')-Ib and aac(6')-Ib-cr. This is the first report of MBLs in Enterobacteriaceae from Argentina.

Outer membrane proteins of members of the family Enterobacteriaceae consist of conserved membrane-spanning segments and hypervariable, surface-exposed regions. We demonstrate that the hypervariable DNA segments corresponding to the surface-exposed regions of these proteins can be used to develop specific DNA probes for the identification of members of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

Tests with 2,713 bacterial isolates (members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and gram-positive cocci) from 14 laboratories compared cefoxitin MICs with cefotetan MICs. Strains that were susceptible to cefoxitin could be assumed to be susceptible to cefotetan. Over half of the cefoxitin-resistant isolates of the Enterobacteriaceae were susceptible to cefotetan.

We show high rates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae carriage among the staff and children at an orphanage in Bamako, Mali. Enterobacteriaceae colonized in 100% and 63%, respectively, of the 38 children and 30 adults studied. Use of antimicrobial drugs appeared excessive and inappropriate; decontamination and hygiene protocols were also questioned.
