Background. Surfactant protein C (SP-C; 35 residues) in lungs has a cationic N-terminal domain with two cysteines covalently linked to palmitoyls and a C-terminal region enriched in Val, Leu and Ile. Native SP-C shows high surface activity, due to SP-C inserting in the bilayer with its cationic N-terminus binding to the polar headgroup and its hydrophobic C-terminus embedded as a tilted, transm...

Intercrosses between inbred lines provide a traditional approach to analysis of polygenic inheritance in model organisms. Chromosome substitution strains (CSSs) have been developed as an alternative to accelerate the pace of gene identification in quantitative trait mapping. We compared a classical intercross and three CSS intercrosses to examine the genetic architecture underlying plasma high-...

BACKGROUND The Chronic Sinusitis Survey (CSS) is a valid, disease-specific questionnaire for assessing health status and treatment effectiveness in chronic rhinosinusitis. In the present study, we developed a Norwegian version of the CSS and assessed its psychometric properties. METHODS In the pooled data set of 65 patients from a trial of treatment for chronic sinusitis with long-standing sy...

Routine treatment of burns with cultured skin substitutes (CSS) has been limited by poor engraftment and by scarring. Hypothetically, topical application of essential nutrients and/or growth factors may support epithelial survival temporarily during graft vascularization. CSS, composed of human epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts attached to collagen-glycosaminoglycan substrates, wer...

We consider the CSS algorithm relating self-orthogonal classical linear codes to q-ary quantum stabilizer codes and we show that to such a pair of a classical and a quantum code one can associate geometric spaces constructed using methods from noncommutative geometry, arising from rational noncommutative tori and finite abelian group actions on Cuntz algebras and fractals associated to the clas...

LTExml, a TEX to XML converter, is being used in a wide range of MKM applications. In this paper, we present a progress report for the 2012 calendar year. Noteworthy enhancements include: increased coverage such as Wikipedia syntax; enhanced capabilities such as embeddable JavaScript and CSS resources and RDFa support; a web service for remote processing via web-sockets; along with general accu...

Digitization of the battlefield is the insertion of digital technologies across all levels and within both combat and support organizations. It depends on the integration of numerous elements including computer processing, advanced software, displays, sensors, communications, and position/navigation components. The advantages of digitization include enhanced command and control (including C2 of...

OBJECTIVE To determine if hands-on instruction in child safety seat (CSS) installation decreases the number of errors in installation. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Primary care offices, emergency department, CSS checkpoint. PARTICIPANTS Parents of children <2 years old receiving medical care or attending a CSS check. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Errors in CSS use. Results. Only 6.4% of...

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a rare disease that has an extremely low incidence rate. CSS prognosis is good, in general; and there are no reports of multiple-organ hemorrhage in CSS. We report a unique case of CSS, wherein, an elderly man experienced multiple organ hemorrhage -- a particularly huge hematoma under the capsule of the liver and poor prognosis.

This paper reports on the light amplification of NaGdF4:Yb,Er,[email protected]4:Yb,[email protected]4 core–shell–shell downconversion nanoparticles (CSS-DCNPs) in near-infrared second biological window (NIR-II: 1000–1700 nm) by plasmonic nanostructures. Through a precisely controlled metallic nanostructure, fluorescence from Yb3+ induced 1000 nm emission, Nd3+ 1060 and Er3+ 1527 emission are e...
