In a slum community in northeastern Brazil 20% of a sample population was colonized with Entamoeba histolytica or Entamoeba dispar and 10.6% was colonized with E. histolytica alone. No correlation between seropositivity for anti-Ga1NAc lectin antibody and colonization was found. These results suggest that colonization does not necessarily produce immunity to reinfection.

Homosexual persons or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients frequently excrete cysts of nonpathogenic strains of Entamoeba histolytica ("Entamoeba dispar"). However, invasive amoebiasis is rare. We report two patients with AIDS and cytomegalovirus colitis in whom invasive amoebiasis was histologically diagnosed. It is concluded that E. histolytica has to be considered in HIV-infe...

The goal of this study was to develop effective and practical field sampling methods for quantification of aerial deposition of airborne conidia of Entomophaga maimaiga over space and time. This important fungal pathogen is a major cause of larval death in invasive gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) populations in the United States. Airborne conidia of this pathogen are relatively large (similar in ...

piscicidal and molluscicidal activities of aqueous extracts of many members of the family euphorbiaceae are well-known, but the toxicity potential of euphorbia turcomanica was not yet studied on any aquatic animals. an acute toxicity test was performed by using a four-day static renewal test to determine the lc 50 value of dried powder of e. turcomanica for the euryhaline fish, aphanius dispar ...

The role of calreticulin (CRT) in host-parasite interactions has recently become an important area of research. Information about the functions of calreticulin and its relevance to the physiology of Entamoeba parasites is limited. The present work demonstrates that CRT of both pathogenic E. histolytica and nonpathogenic E. dispar species specifically interacted with human C1q inhibiting the act...

Preventing the introduction and establishment of forest invasive alien species (FIAS) such as the Asian gypsy moth (AGM) is a high-priority goal for countries with extensive forest resources such as Canada. The name AGM designates a group of closely related Lymantria species (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Lymantriinae) comprising two L. dispar subspecies (L. dispar asiatica, L. dispar japonica) and th...
