Perforated duodenal ulcers are rare complications seen after roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGP). They often present as a diagnostic dilemma as they rarely present with pneumoperitoneum on radiologic evaluation. There is no consensus as to the pathophysiology of these ulcers; however expeditious treatment is necessary. We present two patients with perforated duodenal ulcers and a distant history of...
We report two cases of massive gastrointestinal bleeding due to anterior duodenal ulceration into the cystic artery, with gallbladder infarction as a complication. These cases indicate the potential dangers of laser therapy or embolization in bleeding anterior duodenal ulcers penetrating the cystic artery, as such therapy will arrest blood flow through the cystic artery and may precipitate gall...
HYPOTHESIS Laparoscopic management of perforated duodenal ulcers is safe and effective. DESIGN Prospective nonrandomized controlled trial. SETTING Tertiary care academic center. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between October 1993 and October 1997, 30 patients underwent laparoscopic Graham patch repair of perforated duodenal ulcers and 16 had an open repair. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Morbidity, operat...
In the 1970s, the identification of the histamine H2-receptor by Black and the subsequent development of histamine H2-receptor antagonists revolutionized our understanding and treatment of acid/peptic disorders. More recently, the identification of hydrogen-potassium-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K(+)-ATPase) as the proton pump of the parietal cell and the recognition of the prominent...
Objectives. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES) results in hypersecretion of gastric acid (via gastrinoma) leading to peptic ulcers, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. We describe the novel discovery of hypertrophic, heterotopic gastric mucosa in the proximal duodenal bulb in patients with ZES, which we hypothesize results in an increased incidence of postbulbar ulcers in patients with ZES (a mechanism...

background peptic ulcer disease is a multifactorial health problem affecting almost all populations worldwide. large scale population-based studies are crucial to understanding its scope and specifications in various nations. we aimed to explore environmental risk factors of peptic ulcer disease in the first population based study in ardabil, northwest iran. methods this study was a part of a l...
The prevalence of H. pylori infection in 200 dyspeptic patients undergoing upper G.I. endoscopy was investigated by histology and rapid urease test. H. pylori was associated with 86% cases of chronic gastritis, 84.6% cases of duodenal ulcers and 78.5% of gastric ulcers. None of the 15 histologically normal gastric biopsies showed H. pylori.
BACKGROUND Although many studies have found an association between Helicobacter pylori infection and the development of gastric cancer, many aspects of this relation remain uncertain. METHODS We prospectively studied 1526 Japanese patients who had duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, gastric hyperplasia, or nonulcer dyspepsia at the time of enrollment; 1246 had H. pylori infection and 280 did not...
138 patients who were diagnosed with gastric and duodenal ulcers during EGDS treated. The inclusion of exogenous nitric oxide in the anti-ulcer treatment contributed to eradication Hp, restoration membrane component damaged cells, stabilization local immune reactions humoral immunity. NO-therapy accelerated epithelialization by 2 times compared did not receive complex therapy.
