Relative effects of Beef Quality Assurance (BQA)-related defects in market beef and dairy cows and bulls on selling price at auction was evaluated during 2008. The presence and severity of 23 BQA-related traits were determined during sales in Idaho, California, and Utah. Overall, 18,949 unique lots consisting of 23,479 animals were assessed during 125 dairy sales and 79 beef sales. Mean sale pr...
We report the draft genome sequence of Enterococcus mundtii CRL1656, which was isolated from the stripping milk of a clinically healthy adult Holstein dairy cow from a dairy farm of the northwestern region of Tucumán (Argentina). The 3.10-Mb genome sequence consists of 450 large contigs and contains 2,741 predicted protein-coding genes.
Improved building designs come from a better understanding of the behavioral needs of the dairy cow. The costs to provide for these needs in the facility must be offset by improved milk production, health, and longevity. Research is still required to more fully understand the health implications of many building design considerations and their impact on disease. Perhaps the most important end r...
14 15 In this paper the implementation of a tool was considered, based on Machine Learning (ML) techniques to improve 16 the detection of subclinical mastitis in dairy herds. The analysed population included 71 dairy farms in Asturias 17 (Northern Spain) and a total of 2,407 lactating cows. Four sources of information were available: a) a questionnaire 18 survey describing facilities, milking r...
Presence of mastitis in pregnant as well as unbred dairy heifers can adversely affect the development of milk-producing tissues, leading to less than maximal milk production and increased SCC during their first lactation. Use of nonlactating cow therapy or teat sealants have been beneficial in curing existing IMI and preventing new IMI from developing. When used together, the combination of the...
In the United States Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotypes Kentucky and Cerro are frequently isolated from asymptomatic dairy cows. However, factors that contribute to colonization of the bovine gut by these two serotypes have not been identified. To investigate associations between Salmonella status and bacterial diversity, as well as the diversity of the microbial community in the dai...
In response to farmer requests after milk from their herds was rejected by processors due to poor quality, a study was carried out from April to October 2011 to determine the prevalence of sub clinical mastitis, associated risk factors and causative micro-organisms. Samples were collected from 195 dairy cows on 23 randomly selected dairy farms delivering milk to Isangano, Kirebe and Nyagatare m...
The present study has been focused on the acid and base transesterification of animal fats (dairy cow and beef) to produce biodiesel by varying process parameters such as catalyst amount, catalyst nature, reaction time and temperature. The maximum biodiesel yield after acid catalysis was 94.1 ± 2.43 and 98.4 ± 2.3 percent for dairy cow and beef t...
Background: Milk is one of the most nutritious foods providing a variety of proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins needed to maintain, grow, and develop the body. The aim of this study was to assess microbial and chemical adulterants of raw cow milk collected from dairy farms of Hlabisa villages, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Methods: A total of 68 raw cow milk samples were obtained fr...
