This report presents results from the third and final trial of a three–year study by the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (AFES) investigating the use of Alaska–grown whole–seed canola in dairy cattle diets. In the Year 1 trial, diets containing 2, 4, and 6 pounds canola per cow per day were compared to a standard diet containing no canola. (Randall, Dofing, and Brainard, 1994). In ...
BACKGROUND A study of herd-level risk factors for calf mortality in large Swedish dairy herds showed low serum concentrations of α-tocopherol and β-carotene in 1-7 day old calves to be more common in high mortality herds. Therefore, we aimed to investigate if calf mortality risk at herd level is associated with concentrations of α-tocopherol and/or β-carotene at individual level in feed, colost...
Forty-seven dairy herds (approximately 3,129 lactating cows) from northeast of Spain that were offering exactly the same lactating ration were surveyed to determine the effect of nondietary factors on herd performance. The survey collected information on the profile of the owners (their future intentions, the number of workers, and time devoted to the enterprise), information regarding the anim...
The significance of atypical bovine spongiform encephalopathies (BSE) in cattle for controlling the BSE epidemic is poorly understood. Here we report a case of atypical H-type BSE in a cow born after the implementation of the reinforced feed ban in Europe. This supports an etiology of H-type BSE unrelated to that of classical BSE.
The objective of this review paper was to summarise the latest findings in dairy cattle reproductive economics with an emphasis on high yielding, confined total mixed ration systems. The economic gain increases as the reproductive efficiency improves. These increments follow the law of diminishing returns, but are still positive even at high reproductive performance. Reproductive improvement re...
This paper describes a cost effective Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology for monitoring the health of dairy cows. By monitoring and understanding the cow individual and herd behaviour, farmers can potentially identify the onset of illness, lameness or other undesirable health conditions. However, the WSN implementation needs to cope with various technical challenges before it can be suita...
The objective of this study is to quantify the milk production response per cow and per hectare (ha) for an incremental stocking rate (SR) change, based on a meta-analysis of published research papers. Suitable experiments for inclusion in the database required a comparison of at least two SRs under the same experimental conditions in addition to details on experimental length and milk producti...
Estimation of the energy value of a ration is fundamental for the determination of the quantity required to meet the energy requirement of the animal. Net Energy is the best estimate of the energy value of a feed/ration, but is difficult, time consuming and costly to determine. In addition, it is virtually impossible to measure the energy value of a single feedstuff fed to a representative anim...
Data were obtained from 1980 to 1987 on animals belonging to one of three breeding systems: Hereford, small rotation, and large rotation. Differences among Angus-, Gelbvieh-, Pinzgauer-, and Tarentaise-sired calves within the small rotation system were generally not detected as significant for the preweaning traits of gestation length, calving ease, birth weight, gain to weaning, or creep feed ...
