We report on the synthesis of ZnO quantum dots (QDs) rich in oxygen vacancies by inducing an oxygen deficient environment. The precise tunability of particle size is achieved by counter ion capping of the precursor used for synthesis. The prepared QDs show size tunable visible emission with high quantum yield.

Bis(mandelato)borate [B(Man)2](-) (R- or S-) anions are simply prepared and appear widely effective for resolution of racemic cations. Three examples demonstrate their scope; the alkaloid tetrahydropalmatine (THP), 1,2-diaminopropane (1,2-dap) and the metal-organic complex [Co(phen)3](3+) are readily resolved, either by a facile one-pot procedure, or via counter-ion metathesis.

A simple synthetic method is presented for the precipitation of high purity, dry amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) based on freeze-drying saturated, counter ion free CaCO3 solutions, where the ACC produced shows an extended atmospheric stability. Translation of the methodology to amorphous calcium phosphate demonstrates the generality of the approach.

A pair of chiral template induced anionic homochiral frameworks constructed from achiral components has been synthesized. Ion-exchange of counter cations with polar or chiral organic cations enhances the SHG efficiency of the frameworks. The enantioselective sensing of chiral alkamines can be achieved by the SHG response.
