1. Photoreversal of ultraviolet (UV) injury was studied in the ciliate protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis (geleii) strain W, cultured in the absence of other living organisms. The division pattern of progeny of single animals was followed in hanging drop preparations. 2. A sublethal dose of 450 ergs/mm.(2) of monochromatic UV of wave length 2654 A produces a lag before the first division followed...

We demonstrate that the continuous real-time monitoring of the growth and surface oxidation process of single Cu nanoparticles (NPs) on an indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrate by dark-field microscopy (DFM) and plasmon resonance Rayleigh scattering (PRRS) spectroscopy is possible.

Type B yeasts were more virulent for mice than type A under most experimental conditions. Mice infected with type B yeasts grown in the light lived significantly longer than those with type B yeasts grown in the dark. Virulence differences of type A yeasts grown in continuous fluorescent light versus total darkness were not statistically significant.

The formation of the flower-inducing principle in the leaves of Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr. has been shown by Hamner (1) to consist of at least two partial reactions: a preliminary high intensity light process, followed by a process requiring for its completion a minimum period of continuous darkness. Recently it was reported (3) that the flowering response of Xanthium may be suppressed when ...

Although sucrose plays a role in sugar sensing and its signaling pathway, little is known about the regulatory mechanisms of the expressions of plant sucrose-related genes. Our previous study on the expression of the sucrose phosphate synthase gene family in rice (OsSPSs) suggested the involvement of sucrose sensing and/or circadian rhythm in the transcriptional regulation of OsSPS. To examine ...

in this paper we introduce continuous $g$-bessel multipliers in hilbert spaces and investigate some of their properties. we provide some conditions under which a continuous $g$-bessel multiplier is a compact operator. also, we show the continuous dependency of continuous $g$-bessel multipliers on their parameters.

We present a simple and accurate method to constrain galaxy bias based on the distribution of counts in cells. The most unique feature of our technique is that it is applicable to non-linear scales, where both dark matter statistics and the nature of galaxy bias are fairly complex. First, we estimate the underlying continuous distribution function from precise counts-in-cells measurements assum...

From an engineering point of view, the effect of light intensity distribution on the stability of growth rate should be taken into account in designing effective photobioreactors and sustaining stable growth rates. In the experiments described here, in order to keep operational parameters at an almost constant level, a semi-continuous culture method was developed for cultivation of photosynthet...

The formation of Chl-protein complexes (CPs) in cucumber cotyledons during a dark period after a brief illumination was studied. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the P700-Chl a-protein complex (CPl) and Chi a-protein complex of the PS II core (CPa) increased, with a concomitant decrease in the light-harvesting Chi a/6-protein complex of PS II (LHCII), during 24-h dark incubation of cotyledons afte...

Biliary hyperplasia and liver fibrosis are common features in cholestatic liver disease. Melatonin is synthesized by the pineal gland as well as the liver. Melatonin inhibits biliary hyperplasia of bile duct-ligated (BDL) rats. Since melatonin synthesis (by the enzyme serotonin N-acetyltransferase, AANAT) from the pineal gland increases after dark exposure, we hypothesized that biliary hyperpla...
