The vortex-state complex Hall conductivity (sxy) of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 epitaxial films is investigated from dc to radio frequencies ~up to 7310 Hz!, using a direct transport measurement technique. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of a model generalized from that for the dc Hall conductivity. This generalized model assumes that ~1! the occurrence of sign reversal in the dc v...

Vortex is a workflow language to support decision making activities. It centers around gathering and computing attributes of input objects. The semantics of Vortex is declarative, and the dependency graphs of Vortex programs are acyclic. This paper discusses the application of symbolic model checking techniques to verification of Vortex programs. As a case study we used a Vortex program MIHU fo...

A microscopic, quantum mechanical model for neutron vortices in the crust of a neutron star is presented. After a brief introduction to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which form the basis for our calculations, we present results for density distributions, vortex core sizes and vortex energies, both for an isolated neutron vortex and for the case when the vortex core overlaps with a cylindr...

We study how Laplacian Center Gauge identifies the vortex content of a thick SU(2) vortex configuration on the lattice. This configuration is a solution of the Yang-Mills classical equations of motion having vortex properties. We find that this gauge fixing procedure cleanly identifies the underlying vortex properties. We also study the monopole content of this configuration detected with this ...

We study vortex knotting in the Faddeev-Skyrme model. Starting with a straight vortex line twisted around its axis we follow its evolution under dissipative energy minimization dynamics. With low twist per unit length the vortex forms a helical coil, but with higher twist numbers the vortex becomes knotted or a ring is formed around the vortex. This paper presents tools which allow an advanced investigation of spatial and temporal progress of segmented vortex structures in flow fields with the consideration of vortex dynamics. The work is based on the local and Eulerian detection and segmentation of vortex structures and the visualization of these structures with recent visualization methods, e.g. the application of LIC-textures on th...

We perform Monte Carlo studies of vortices in three dimensions in a cylindrical confinement, with uniform and nonuniform density. The former is relevant to rotating 4He; the latter is relevant to a rotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. In the former case, we find dominant angular thermal vortex fluctuations close to the cylinder wall. For the latter case, a novel effect is that at low temp...

The vortex stretching process is relevant to energy transport at various scales in turbulent flow and in vortex reconnection. For these, reasons, exact solutions for vortex flow are useful. Robinson and Saffman [1] examined the Burgers vortex solution and found closed form steady solutions for special parameter values. Unsteady 2D Burgers vortex solutions have been used to model the spanwise st...

Recently several different approaches have been developed for the simulation of three-dimensional incompressible fluid flows using vortex methods. Some versions use detailed tracking of vortex filament structures and often local curvatures of these filaments, while other methods require only crude information, such as the vortex blobs of the two-dimensional case. Can such "crude" algorithms acc...

We carried out experiments to study the e ect of local disturbances on the vortex dynamics in the light-sensitive Belousov Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. It was found that irradiation with visible light of the core region of a rotating spiral wave (vortex) in an oscillatory medium results in a bifurcation which dramatically changes the shape of the vortex. The bifurcation is seen as an unfolding in...
