Abstract Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare, aggressive, early childhood with unfavorable prognosis. There have been 31 cases reported children AT/RT CNS and extra primary tumors. In addition to its aggressive tendencies, malignant rhabdoid (MRTs) kidney also shown a common genetic abnormality-inactivating mutation SMARC B1/INI-gene. We repor...

BACKGROUND The peak incidence of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in childhood indicates that intrauterine or neonatal characteristics are potential risk factors or symptoms of early onset of disease. METHODS We conducted a registry-based case-control study nested in the childhood populations of Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway on the association between indicators of fetal growth and ...

Natural killer (NK) cells play an important role in immune surveillance against tumors. The present work aimed to study the cytotoxic activity of NK cells and T cell subsets in peripheral blood of 13 patients with primary tumors in central nervous system (CNS). As controls 29 healthy subjects with the age range equivalent to the patients were studied. The methods employed were: a) determination...

This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics and outcomes of second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in survivors of childhood cancer from multiple institutions in Korea. A total of 102 patients from 11 institutions who developed SMN after childhood cancer treatment between 1998 and 2011 were retrospectively enrolled. The most common primary malignant neoplasms (PMNs) were centr...

BACKGROUND Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the central nervous system (CNS-PNETs) are a rare group of neoplasms occurring in the CNS that includes supratentorial CNS-PNETs, medulloepitheliomas, and ependymoblastomas. While ependymoblastomas frequently carry chromosome 19q13.41 amplification and show aggressive clinical behavior, the biological mechanisms and molecular alterations contributi...

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is an uncommon manifestation of non-central nervous system (CNS) metastatic disease. Diagnosis, however, has important prognostic and treatment implications. We present a case in which intracranial leptomeningeal carcinomatosis from a primary breast cancer was detected with (18)F-FDG PET/CT, despite its low sensitivity for detection of CNS metastases from non-CNS p...

Abstract Background Cavitating ultrasonic aspirator (CUSA) devices are commonly used in neurosurgical procedures to carefully debulk tumor from adjacent healthy brain tissue. Here, we explore the feasibility of using minced tissue classify otherwise discarded sample material by DNA methylation according respective World Health Organization (WHO) Classification Tumors Central Nervous System (CNS...

Investigating the molecular composition of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) for tumor diagnostic purposes is becoming increasingly popular, especially diseases which diagnosis challenging, such as central nervous system (CNS) malignancies. Thorough examination content sEVs by Raman spectroscopy a promising but hitherto barely explored approach these types. We attempt to reveal potential role...

Primary central nervous system (CNS) teratomas are rare tumors that consist of all three germ cell layers. We describe a young man with a primary malignant CNS teratocarcinoma presenting as leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. Diagnosis of primary CNS teratocarcinomas is challenging; relentless pursuit of the diagnosis must follow even if early ancillary studies are inconclusive.
