Introduction: The ectopic ciliated cyst is a rare non-odontogenic cyst which occurs as a delayed complication after maxillary sinus radical surgery; this lesion emerges due to the destruction of the sinus mucosa during the surgery and entrapment of the respiratoryepitheliumin the region. This lesion has been observed in very rare cases following genioplasty and bimaxillary orthognathic surgery....

Ciliary function studies for the diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) are usually performed on nasal brush biopsy samples. It is not uncommon to find disrupted epithelial strips of tissue in these samples, and occasionally throughout a sample. The aim of the present study was to determine if cilia on disrupted ciliated epithelial edges beat with a normal pattern and frequency similar t...

Cutaneous ciliated cyst was described as a painless cyst occurring on the lower limbs of women between the ages of 15 and 30 years. The cysts are typically lined by ciliated cuboidal to columnar epithelium with pseudostratified areas and focal squamous metaplasia is occasionally present. Immunohistochemical studies have demonstrated that the cysts are PR and ER positive, similar to the epitheli...

Ultrastructural and biochemical features of efferent ducts (EDs) are indicative of an intense absorptive activity towards the luminal fluid. This function was investigated by 1) the immunohistochemical localization of different aquaporins, integral membrane water channels that facilitate rapid passive movement of water, and 2) the histochemical localization of lectins, known to have specific af...

This study was carried out to investigate the histological and anatomical description of the male genital tract in Iranian Native White Roosters (IWR). The seminiferous tubules had a dense and compact organization. An average of 12 layers of cells was seen in the seminiferous tubules epithelium. The spermatogonal cell layer showed some variation between different birds in 1-3 layers; however, t...

Ciliated hepatic foregut cysts are uncommon solitary cysts of the liver that originate from the embryologic foregut. Clinically and radiographically, these lesions can be difficult to distinguish from neoplasms. Recent reports have demonstrated that ciliated hepatic foregut cysts may undergo dysplastic progression, supporting the argument to excise these cysts when discovered. Fewer than 100 ca...

anomaly expressed as bronchial or esophageal cysts and usually develops above the diaphragm, however on rare occasions, does occur below the diaphragm (1). Ciliated cysts are considered benign, but are radiologically difficult to differentiate from a malignant neoplasm, which is a cystic structure in or adjacent to the gallbladder (2). To our knowledge, only a few cases of gallbladder cysts tha...

The incidence of ciliated cells in the human endometrium was determined. Conditions associated with an excess of oestrogenic activity were characterized by an increased incidence of ciliated cells, whilst oestrogen deficiency was associated with decreased numbers. When endometrium was cultured, addition of oestradiol-17 beta caused an increase in the ciliated cell population.

Ciliated airway epithelial cells are critical for mucosal barrier function, including host defense against pathogens. This cell population is often the primary target and thereby the first line of defense against many common respiratory viruses. It is also the precursor for mucous cells and thereby promotes mucociliary clearance of infectious and other noxious agents. Cells with motile cilia in...
