The results of ultrasound examination and intravenous urography after a urinary infection were compared in 100 children. Thirty seven had an abnormality on urography, but in 12 this was not seen on ultrasound. One of these had renal scarring, the remainder only minor abnormalities.
This up-to-date, revised edition on ultrasound in anesthesia has now been expanded to cover the important areas of pain management and critical care, and includes the new Royal College of Anaesthetists' guidelines for using ultrasound in anesthesia and intensive care. A comprehensive, practical guide, it explains the benefits of ultrasound for all essential practices, ranging from vascular acce...
Anuria in children may arise from a host of causes and is a frequent concern in the emergency department. This review focuses on differentiating common causes of obstructive and nonobstructive anuria and the role of point-of-care ultrasound in this evaluation. We discuss some indications and basic techniques for bedside ultrasound imaging of the urinary system.
We reviewed 15 children with transient synovitis of the hip who had aspiration of an effusion under local anaesthesia with ultrasound guidance. There were no significant complications; aspiration was useful for diagnosis and gave considerable symptomatic relief. We discuss the role of ultrasound in diagnosis and treatment.
Indwelling femoral venous catheters were prospectively studied by ultrasonography to define the frequency and evolution of inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis. IVC thrombosis was identified in six of 56 catheters (54 children). Only one patient with a positive ultrasound scan had clinical signs of thrombosis. All children with IVC thrombosis had had catheters in place for over six days. It is r...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Caudal epidural anesthesia is the most popular regional anesthesia technique used in children. With advanced age, only the relative difficulty in localizing the sacral hiatus limits its use. However, in adults this technique has been widely used to control chronic pain by adjuvant use of fluoroscopy. Thus, the ability to locate the hiatus and define anatomical variatio...
OBJECTIVE To assess the ability to detect and characterize middle ear effusion in children using A-mode ultrasonography. DESIGN Prospective nonblinded comparison study. SETTING Tertiary children's hospital. PATIENTS Forty children (74 ears) scheduled to undergo bilateral myringotomy with pressure equalization tube placement. INTERVENTIONS Before myringotomy, ultrasound examination of th...
OBJECTIVE We sought to determine the prevalence of initial computed tomography (CT) utilization and to identify regions in the United States where CT is highly used as the first imaging study for children with nephrolithiasis. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study in 9228 commercially insured children aged 1 to 17 years with nephrolithiasis who underwent diagnostic imaging in the Unite...
Background: Development of thoracic ultrasound made it a useful tool for diagnosing respiratory disorders. But it has been rarely described in literatures about the accuracy of sonographic signs specific to pneumothorax. We studied the sonographic findings of pneumothorax in children and examined the patients with chest pain and/or dyspnea in our pediatric emergency department to determine the ...
BACKGROUND Goiter prevalence in school-age children is an indicator of the severity of iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) in a population. In areas of mild-to-moderate IDDs, measurement of thyroid volume (Tvol) by ultrasound is preferable to palpation for grading goiter, but interpretation requires reference criteria from iodine-sufficient children. OBJECTIVE The study aim was to establish in...
