The bioactive glass 45S5 was crystallized to 8-100 vol % of crystals by thermal treatments from 550-680 degrees C. The micro-structure of the glass-ceramics had a very uniform crystal size, ranging from 8 to 20 microns. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to determine the rate of hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) formation that occurs on bioactive glass and glass-ceramic implan...
We demonstrate highly efficient evanescent coupling between a highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass two dimensional photonic crystal waveguide and a silica fiber nanowire. We achieve 98% insertion efficiency to the fundamental photonic crystal waveguide mode with a 3dB coupling bandwidth of 12nm, in good agreement with theory. This scheme provides a promising platform to realize low power nanocav...

Free-standing "AMTIR-1" (Ge33As12Se55) chalcogenide glass films have been patterned using a focused ion beam (FIB) to create two-dimensional photonic crystal membranes. The triangular lattices were selected for a photonic bandgap relevant to fiber telecommunications. Optical measurements of transmission spectra as a function of incident angle showed clear signs of Fano resonances, indicating th...
The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of various heat-pressing procedures (different holding time and heat pressing temperature) on the microstructure and flexural strength of lithium disilicate glass ceramic. An experimental lithium silicate glass ceramic (ELDC) was prepared from the SiO2-Li2O-K2O-Al2O3-ZrO2-P2O5 system and heat-pressed following different procedures by varying tem...
Biosilicate®–gelatine bone scaffolds by the foam replica technique: development and characterization
The development of bioactive glass-ceramic materials has been a topic of great interest aiming at enhancing the mechanical strength of traditional bioactive scaffolds. In the present study, we test and demonstrate the use of Biosilicate® glass-ceramic powder to fabricate bone scaffolds by the foam replica method. Scaffolds possessing the main requirements for use in bone tissue engineering (95%...
Rare earth doped glass-ceramics transparent in the infrared region up to 16 μm have been prepared and studied. The enhancement of the emission of Er 3+ ions at 1.54 μm with increasing crystallinity was demonstrated in a seleniumbased glass-ceramic having a composition of 80GeSe2-20Ga2Se3+1000 ppm Er. The optical transmission, microstructure and luminescence properties of a base glass and glass-...
Preliminary results of an investigation into the possible use of glass-ceramic frits from fly ash and glass cullet in terracotta (stoneware) tile manufacture are reported. Two new ceramics were studied and compared with a plant composition, containing 45 wt.% sodium feldspar. In the first ceramic batch 20% of the feldspar was substituted by frits and in the second the whole amount of feldspar w...
Fast and robust infiltration of anodic TiO2 nanotube layers with a model chalcogenide As3S7 glass via spin-coating is reported for the first time. Effective sensitization leads to a significant visible light photocurrent response. This easy and cheap infiltration method can be extended for deposition of other absorbers into nanotubular layers.
