Progressive collapse is defined as the spread of an initial failure from element to element, eventually resulting in the collapse of an entire structure or a disproportionately large part of it. The current progressive collapse analyses and design methods in guidelines and codes focus on the alternate load path method. This method is suitable especially in the case of blast-induced progressive ...

recently, two of the authors have introduced the collapse capacity spectrummethodology, which allows the assessment of the collapse capacity of highly inelastic p-deltasensitive regular frame structures without performing non-linear time-history analyses. the mainingredient of this method is the collapse capacity spectrum, which represents the seismic collapsecapacity of an inelastic non-deteri...

We present an interesting case of a patient with a previously known diaphragmatic hernia in which the colon became incarcerated, ischemic and finally perforated. She had no prior history of abdominal pain or vomiting, yet she presented with cardiovascular collapse. She was quickly diagnosed with a tension pneumothorax and treated accordingly. To our knowledge, this is the only case report of a ...

We present a rare complication of cardiac arrest from asystole in the setting of prolonged endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) procedure. Cardiopulmonary complications of ERCP are rare but can be fatal. Therefore it is essential to closely monitor the patient during ERCP. Immediate access to resuscitation equipment facilitating prompt intervention in the unlikely event of fatal...

We describe a case of a 25-year-old female with a dopamine secreting PPGL diagnosed retrospectively with biochemical analysis. This finding resulted in change in approach to investigation and management, given their important clinical implications. There are important differences in management of dopamine secreting PPGL compared to classical noradrenaline and adrenaline-secreting PPGL. This inc...

Venous air embolus (VAE) occurs when gas, specifically atmospheric air, enters into the vascular system. Although rare, they can be fatal due to risk of cardiovascular collapse. In this report, we present a unique case of a 66-year-old female trauma patient with an inferior vena cava air embolism. An overview of the potential cause is presented, along with a review of the management of VAE.

Anesthetic management for massive blood loss in liver surgery concomitant with hemodynamic instability secondary to carcinoid crisis can be challenging in the perioperative setting. Hypotension, diarrhea, facial flushing, bronchospasm, and tricuspid and pulmonic valvular diseases are the common manifestations of carcinoid syndrome. This report illustrates the importance of early recognition and...

Anaesthetizing patients with Long QT Syndrome is a major challenge, as the potential for sudden catastrophic cardiovascular collapse is well known. We present a 15-year-old boy with Long QT Syndrome who presented for an elective renal transplant. All electrolyte concentration abnormalities were corrected preoperative and adequate beta-blockade was maintained. The patient was given a target cont...

Argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a common and safe bronchoscopic technique used in the management of obstructing lesions and hemorrhage in the central airways. Complications of bronchoscopic APC are uncommon and include hemorrhage, perforation and fire in the airways. While bronchoscopic APC has been reported to cause systemic gas embolization and associated cardiovascular collapse, we report ...
