Leiomyosarcoma is a relatively uncommon malignant lesion that exhibits smooth muscle differentiation. Occurrence of this tumor in the oral cavity is exceedingly rare, reflecting the paucity of smooth muscle in this region. This article presents a rare case of leiomyosarcoma of the buccal mucosa, which was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining.

Spindle cell carcinomas are biphasic tumors of monoclonal origin with mesenchymal component proved to be the dedifferentiated forms of conventional squamous cell carcinomas. This unusual variant of squamous cell carcinoma usually presents in the larynx, but are also infrequently reported in the gingiva, tongue, lips, hypopharynx and nasal cavity. We report a spindle cell carcinoma of buccal muc...

Back ground & Aims: In the edentulous patients some authors suggest to leave dentures in when ventilating with bag-mask. In this research, we suggest a more efficient method.  Materials & Methods: In the prospective blind randomized clinical trial we included 200 patients (age≥55) into two groups. After induction of anesthesia in all groups, in the group I, we placed folded gauze in each bucca...

PURPOSE We conducted a clinical study to correlate oral cavity dose with clinical mucositis, perform in vivo dosimetry, and determine the feasibility of obtaining buccal mucosal cell samples in patients undergoing head-and-neck radiation therapy. The main objective is to establish a quantitative dose response for clinical oral mucositis. METHODS AND MATERIALS Twelve patients undergoing radiat...

Three new free-living nematode species belonging to the genus Mudwigglus gen. n. are described from the continental slope of New Zealand. The new genus is characterised by four short cephalic setae, fovea amphidialis in the shape of an elongated loop, narrow mouth opening, small, lightly cuticularised buccal cavity, pharynx with oval-shaped basal bulb, and secretory-excretory pore (if present) ...

The mechanics of lung ventilation in frogs and aquatic salamanders has been well characterized, whereas lung ventilation in terrestrial-phase (post-metamorphic) salamanders has received little attention. We used electromyography (EMG), X-ray videography, standard videography and buccal and body cavity pressure measurements to characterize the ventilation mechanics of adult (post-metamorphic) ti...

Okranema eileenae is a marine nematode from Australian sandy beaches. The structure of its cephalic region is described by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Three large lips, separated by three deep clefts and surmounted by flexible liplets, surround the mouth. Transverse and longitudinal sections of the head have been used to investigate the ultrastructure of the lips, buc...

1. Certain sugars were transported across the buccal mucosa by a carrier-mediated mechanism. 2. The metabolic loss of sugars from the mouth in a 5 min test period was negligible. 3. The buccal mucosal transport process was stereospecific for D-glucose and L-arabinose. 4. The absorption of D-glucose, galactose and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose was at least partly dependent on the presence of sodium ions ...
