We compared the inflammatory and cytotoxic responses caused by household mold and bacteria in human and mouse cell lines. We studied the fungi Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium spinulosum, and Stachybotrys chartarum and the bacteria Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Streptomyces californicus for their cytotoxicity and ability to stimulate the production of inflammatory mediators i...

Polyandry is more widespread than anticipated from Bateman's principle but its ultimate (evolutionary) causes and proximate (mechanistic) correlates are more difficult to pinpoint than those of polygyny. Here, we combined mating experiments, quantification of reproductive traits and microsatellite genotyping to determine the fitness implications of polyandry in two predatory mite species, where...

Latitudinal trends in cold tolerance have been observed in many terrestrial ectotherms, but few studies have investigated interpopulational variation in the cold physiology of marine invertebrates. Here, the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus was used as a model system to study how local adaptation influences the cold tolerance of a broadly distributed marine crustacean. Among five popul...

We investigated fine-scale (5m, 4h) speciesand stage-specific (N1 to C6) distributions of common copepods at an anchor station in a Swedish fjord during two 24 h periods in October 1997. Generally, both calanoid and cyclopoid nauplii were found near the surface, while copepodids stayed deeper in the water column. No diurnal migration was observed. To analyze the observed distributions, we combi...

Surveys of mite fauna on Dittrichia viscosa and D. graveolens (Asteraceae) were conducted at multiple locations in Tartous Latakia governorates, Syria, 2021 2022. A total 13 species belonging to seven families (Acaridae, Camerobiidae, Erythraeidae, Phytoseiidae, Raphignathidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tetranychidae) collected. Among them, Erythraeus (Zaracarus) passidonicus (Erythraeidae), Raphignathus ...

In this study we analyze the behavior of California mice (Peromyscus californicus) at nest sites under experimental treatments that alter male endocrine status. We analyze infrared video recordings of the nest area of mice to validate data collected via radio telemetry and audio recordings. Results will contribute to our understanding of factors that mediate parental care in species that mainta...

Telenomus parides Loiácono et Margaría sp. nov., is described and illustrated based on specimens reared from the eggs of Parides ascanius (Cramer). Parides ascanius is a threatened papilionid, which is endemic to the restingas of the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The new Telenomus species is gregarious endoparasitoid and belongs to the Telenomus californicus species complex.
