Pharmacological studies of thermoregulatory effector and neuronal responses indicate that nitric oxide (NO) may have differential roles in the control of body temperature and during fever. Histochemical analysis of site-specific changes in NO synthase activity in defined states of thermal stimulation appears a promising approach to unravel the underlying hypothalamic neuronal cytoarchitecture.

Organisms in hot environments will not be able to passively dissipate metabolically generated heat. Instead, they have to revert to evaporative cooling, a process that is energetically expensive and promotes excessive water loss. To alleviate these costs, birds in captivity let their body temperature increase, thereby entering a state of hyperthermia. Here we explore the use of hyperthermia in ...

Although body temperature is one of the most tightly regulated homeostatic parameters in humans, temperature abnormalities are frequently encountered in the in-hospital patient population, particularly in those with central nervous system (CNS) pathologies. CNS injuries are a prevalent cause of death and disability in young persons and on the rise among older persons. Brain and body temperature...

Codons expanded by a silent position (quadruplet or tetracodons) may solve the conundrum that at life's origins, the weak tricodon-anticodon interactions could not promote translation in the absence of complex ribosomes. Modern genomes have isolated tetracodons resulting from insertion mutations. Some bioinformatic analyses suggest that tetracoding stretches overlap with regular mitochondrial p...

This paper reviews the literature on the circadian rhythm of body temperature (CRT). The review starts with a brief discussion of methodological procedures followed by the description of known patterns of oscillation in body temperature, including ultradian and infradian rhythms. Special sections are devoted to issues of species differences, development and aging, and the relationships between ...

I recorded body temperature and behaviour of eight Crocodylus johnstoni in the wild over a 2-yr period in order to quantify the effect of posturing on body temperature and to provide a mechanistic explanation of how behaviour affects body temperature. Behaviour was categorised according to the proportion of a crocodile's surface area exposed from the water (0% exposed [=diving] to 100% exposed ...
