A significant quantum of crude oil is trapped in reservoirs and often unrecoverable by conventional oil recovery methods. Further downstream, the petroleum industry is facing challenges to remove sulfur, metal, nitrogen as well as undesirable organic compounds from the crude. Conventional secondary recovery methods such as water and gas injections helped to increase the productivity of the well...

background sulfur oxides released from the burning of oil causes severe environmental pollution. the sulfur can be removed via the 4s pathway in biodesulfurization (bds). immobilization approaches have been developed to prevent cell contamination of oil during the bds process. objectives the encapsulation of rhodococcus erythropolis r1 in calcium alginate beads was studied in order to enhance c...

The present study is focused on biodesulfurization of natural gas in a batch culture using active microorganisms. The microorganisms used for the removal of hydrogen sulfide were obtained from a hot spring. The experiments were conducted with mixed gas at operating temperatures of 25 to 45°C with a time interval of 5h. Two kinetic models included Logistic and Monod models in a batch culture wer...

The vgb gene, encoding Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb), was introduced into a specific desulfurization bacterium, Rhodococcus erythropolis LSSE8-1. The VHb-specific spectrum was observed for the recombinant. Compared to the wild type, the strain bearing vgb showed a higher biomass yield and desulfurizing activity.

Chemostat enrichment is a classical microbiological method that is well suited for use in directed-evolution strategies. We used a two-phase sulfur-limited chemostat to select for gain-of-function mutants with mutations in the biodesulfurization (Dsz) system of Rhodococcus erythropolis IGTS8, enriching for growth in the presence of organosulfur compounds that could not support growth of the wil...

The main goal of this work was the production and characterization of a novel invertase activity from Zygosaccharomyces bailii strain Talf1 for further application to biodesulfurization (BDS) in order to expand the exploitable alternative carbon sources to renewable sucrose-rich feedstock. The maximum invertase activity (163 U ml(-1)) was achieved after 7 days of Z. bailii strain Talf1 cultivat...

Petroleum-polluted soil samples from Ahvaz oilfield were enriched, using three methods to detect microorganisms with different dibenzothiophene degradation capabilities. Strain NISOC-03, a nitrate-reducing, oxidase negative, catalase, citrate, and urease positive, gram negative rod, showed interesting dibenzothiophene desulfurization behavior, designated as Entreobacter sp. strain NISOC-03 base...
