Poor drug encapsulation efficiency and rapid release of the encapsulated drug limit the use of nanoparticles in biomedical applications involving water-soluble drugs. We have developed a novel polymer-surfactant nanoparticle formulation, using the anionic surfactant Aerosol OT (AOT) and polysaccharide polymer alginate, for sustained release of water-soluble drugs. Particle size of nanoparticles...

Recent advances in the treatment of arrhythmias have stemmed from careful observation and monitoring in postoperative intensive care areas and from the renewed interest of physicians in the arrhythmias after myocardial infarction. The basic treatment of arrhythmias is the same whenever they occur. Although a knowledge of the electrophysiological changes leading to arrhythmias (Hoffman and Crane...

Multiple myeloma is still an incurable disease. In recent years the introduction of 3 novel drugs oriented on basic mechanisms of multiple myeloma cells proliferation and survival has improved patients' outcome. These drugs are: thalidomide, its new analog, lenalidomide, and proteasome inhibitor, bortezomib. All three are highly effective both in newly diagnosed and relapsed/resistant patients.

Although limited data exist, electrode-measured pH values of human tumors and adjacent normal tissues, which are concurrently obtained by the same investigator in the same patient, consistently show that the electrode pH (believed to primarily represent tissue extracellular pH) is substantially and consistently lower in the tumor than in normal tissue. In contrast, the 31P-magnetic resonance sp...

Purpose: Limited drug distribution within solid tumors is an important cause of drug resistance. Basic drugs (e.g., doxorubicin)maybe sequestered in acidic organelles, thereby limiting drug distribution todistal cells and diverting drugs from their target DNA. Here we investigate the effects of pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, on doxorubicin uptake, and doxorubicin distribution and activi...
